GM Claims Obama Era Efficiency Standards Were Not Rooted In Reality
General Motors said it favors an annual increase in fuel-efficiency standards based on "historic rates" rather than tough Obama-era rules or a Trump administration proposal that would freeze requirements.

In a federal filing made public on Monday, the automaker said the Obama rules that aimed to hike fleetwide fuel efficiency to more than 50 mpg by 2025 are "not technologically feasible or economically practicable.

At the time they proposed them - the EPA consulted the actual car manufacturers - and NEVER actually proposed a standard for ALL cars combined at 50mpg. THe actual program based Mileage standards on the WHEELBASE of the cars - and only the smallest cars fell into the 50MPG standard. GM and FORD were both part of the process - and to try to say they were not is being disingenuous.

Certainly GM had to fall in line, Obutt appointees were dispatched to run it. No company would voluntarily agree to something this draconian or drastic. OR we’d all be driving Chevy Sparks not V12 Maybachs.

True that automakers were in on it. Problem is the then government wanted everyone to drive smaller vehicles, but car buyers, the auto makers customers said NO to that idea. The majority of Americans want bigger vehicles, oh like maybe a Maybach, and voted with their wallets. So the standards cannot be met.

What GM claims is impossible, foreign auto consumers experience today.

The motive behind GM's influence is to allow them to continue selling today's gasoline-powered fuel-inefficient vehicles, without needing to invest R&D funds into that drivetrain as GM slowly transitions to a pure EV market. It's more profitable that way for GM.

And when sales decline for GM, we can always punish the better-engineered, more fuel-efficient gassers from abroad through tariffs, while claiming they have some bogus unfair advantage.

And when GM's losses mount too high, we can always borrow billions of dollars from a Chinese bank, give that mountain of money to GM, and send the bill to those citizen who pay taxes... just like we did last time
