SPIED: An Agent Catches The Next-gen Mercedes-Benz GLS ROAMING FREE Around SoCal
Every now and then, the Agents at AutoSpies strike gold. Yesterday was one of those days.

While traveling to and from Pasadena yesterday on a mission, Agent 001 stumbled across a mini Mercedes-Benz convoy. But, it wasn't an ordinary type of deal. This was different.

SPIED: Mercedes-Benz GLS

That's because there were two fully camouflaged vehicles on the freeway.

The first vehicle in the convoy was pretty evident. It was the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE, which was revealed recently.

The second vehicle, however, was a bit more interesting. That's because it wasn't another GLE. It turns out it actually was the all-new GLS. Given that the all-new BMW X7 just was debuted, we know the pressure is on for the three-pointed star to deliver.

That said, check out 001's snaps from yesterday, below. While the vehicle is under heavy cladding, you at least get an idea of what's coming down the 'pike — literally and figuratively.

That's probably one of those "Hey we're going to drive the prototype at this time and place. We'd sure love you to get some spy shots" kind of thing.

This makes me forget the X7.

Yea I’m sure some Benz execs have seen the X7 in the press and thought, let’s give the ppl something else to talk about

The new GLS is very crucial for Benz and will host the Maybach trim level, putting another thorn in Bentley/Rolls Royce side as they have with the Maybach S, by being one of the few vehicles bridging the gap between luxury and ultra luxury

Definitely not the case, Matt.

While I am sure that happens with other pubs and during certain meetings/press junkets, this isn't applicable here.

I've had the random luck to see prototypes on the Highway 58/I-40 corridor....mostly Hyundai/Kia though the reason for that is predictable.

There are other sites that have better shots for more complete GLS mules in Europe. In general, the overall proportions will be improved. And don't forget that the new GLS will also give us a mild tease at a large Merc-Maybach SUV thats rumored as well.

I'm pretty sure when the new GLS is officially released, they'll show a Merc-AMG GLS65 which will be a trim or two below the Maybach version.

Better proportioned, but I wish they'd ditch those hideous rims.

That second row door looks crazy long so the interior room aft of the front must have increased substantially. Makes sense since the GLE now offers a 3rd row, it must further distinguish itself

When you have a 3 row, access the the third row is facilitated by a longer door. I'm glad Mercedes understands that.

There was a time - when the Mercedes USA headquarters was in New Jersey - that seeing the newest of their cars - was a common occurrence. Mercedes moved - but often what you saw did not really represent what was coming.

This is true.

When NA HQ was in Montvale, I'd see stuff all the time.

Now we've only got BMW Group, JLR, Volvo and Ferrari. VW has a technical facility in Bergen County as well that there's always new/interesting stuff there that's a year or two out...

You even see odd stuff up here in the Great White North. I saw an new Opel Station Wagon a few years ago in Uxbridge. GM brought it in for testing I suppose. And I have seen cars wrapped just like in the spy shots on this site. Cold weather testing / highway mileage I suppose. Just odd to see them in the GTA.
