Volkswagen Plans To Steal Away Model 3 Market With $21,000 Sedan

Volkswagen AG plans to add a subcompact crossover costing about 18,000 euros ($21,000) to its all-electric I.D. family of vehicles, expanding its lineup of zero-emissions vehicles that are more affordable than those of Tesla Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.

The entry level vehicle may be built at VW’s factory in Emden, Germany, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plan hasn’t received final approval by the manufacturer’s supervisory board. Sales could start sometime after 2020, and the company expects to sell about 200,000 per year, they said.

this sounds great. Maybe I'll pick one up when they are finally available in 2030.

You're an idiot.

Also, the Golf EV is not a viable car for most people with 125 miles of range at best and terrible performance. In general it has been a total failure, even in California and I have seen lease specials as low as $40/mo for it.

The ironic thing is that I don't work at Tesla. Also, I don't think any of the pro-EV people on this forum work for Tesla. Which goes to show why the company WILL succeed, people love the cars enough to advocate for them. What's your favorite car, or MD's, or Steve's? I have no idea... There probably isn't any single car that you love enough to advocate for as much as Tesla owners do for their cars.

That's why in the end, after all the negativity, namecalling, and misinformation... Tesla will still win.

Not a liar, and you guys that obviously work for car dealerships might want to start thinking of a plan B.

VW keeps talking, but we still haven't seen any product. Words like may and might are always in their talking points. Just build something, for crying out loud. Build the PHEV Tiguan for the US market and you'll sell a bunch, if you can keep the price under control. But that's why you have factories in the US and Mexico. Just do it!

Why would anyone trust this lying, thieving company again?

If VW can crack the cost angle, the Model 3 is in deep caca.

It will be a much smaller car than the Model 3, but if they can sell it for $21k it will put a lot of pressure on Tesla.

I hear that Tesla is gonna make a $35,000 Model 3... Oh, wait... they announced that two and a half years ago, and still have not delivered.

Perhaps what companies say is much less important that what they do.

Believe it or not, but not all automakers are as proficient at lying as Tesla - check out their recent fraudulent financial statement, in which the major profit source are ZEV credits from the govt. And NOBODY can delay an upcoming ptoduct like Tesla can - years late aand still years in the future, VW won't have to worry about competition from Tesla's vaporware product - their "Affordable $35,000 Model 3", the car that never was and never will be. VW will be competeting against Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Polestar, etc - no Tesla to be found in their market segment. They will sell to the tens of millions, while Tesla continues its search for people dumb enough to pay $60,000 for an old timey compact sedan with the worst reliability record on the planet, having shouldered Tesla's $100,000 plus Model X from that distinguished position.

ZEV credits were $50 million last quarter, profit was over $300 million. Obviously they would still be profitable without the credits.

You can't make this stuff up.

People criticize Tesla for not selling the $35,000 Model 3 fast enough, while at the same time applauding VW for showing us a drawing of a concept car they might bring to market years from now.

People are NOT criticizing Tesla for not selling the $35K Model 3 fast enough. You know that's not the case so stop trying to engineer the truth. They ARE criticizing Tesla for doing a bait and switch--unethical business practice--of taking deposits on a car they had no intention of building solely as a way to grab money. With other brands, a person with a deposit is the first served. The ONLY reason there is TALK of a $35K Model 3 is because Tesla knows that if they don't pay it lip service the Feds will become even more interested in their shady business practices.

There was no official timeline on the $35k version and the deposits are 100% refundable, so I doubt there is liability for anything here. If the deposits were not refundable, that would be a different story.
