Brilliant Or Bonehead? Audi To Transform The TT Into A 4 Door Sportscar

The next generation of the Audi TT will be dramatically overhaul with the iconic sports car transforming into a more practical and profitable four-door coupe, Auto Express can exclusively reveal. And it will be in showrooms in less than two years.

The German firm first hinted at the idea of a four-door TT with the TT Sportback concept back at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. However, plans to bring that model into showrooms never got off the ground for a number of reasons.

I don't think this will spark greater sales...the TT's image and aura already cast in stone, either loving it or thinking its not for me. Loved the style of the first generation but not so much since.

Yay! Another Audi 4-door sports car... Blöde! Doof! Kurzsichtig!

A 4 door sedan with the cute face and fat body of TT? Not gonna sell.

So the Audi 3 and 4 are not sufficient? Is there really a need for another small 4 door car in their line up?

No such thing as a 4 door coupe. Coupes are 2 doors, period. This will be a sedan.

Countguy, you are mistaken. I will easily convince you over a vegetarian dinner of ribeye steak.

I think the 2010 concept "Quattro" should have been the next TT. It was essentially a shortened A5 coupe with aggressive fender flairs and front end. But then again Audi has come out with a 4DR RS5. So as to compete with BMW and Mercedes and take away the pressure for competing with Porsche's Cayman. The only issue I really see is that there is then no point to have an RS3 as that's only going to cannibalize sales of both. So there needs to be a decision made at Audi. The original TT had distinctive styling that made it stand out from the crowd. The current model is really a barely surface tightening up of version 2. A 4DR version at least makes it distinct looking. Just don't offer an RS3 version and make the base TT a step up in performance from an A3.

Let's see...the TT is crap for sales worldwide, so let's turn it into a $60-70K Golf sedan in a world where sedan sales are collapsing. No wonder Audi has been yanked as an engineering center for VWAG.

Not for the price. The smarter move would be to make an A3 Sportback variant similar to how the A5 Sportback compliments the A4. The CLA continues to find success (outselling th A3) primarily because of its price point. The TT is priced 25% higher and a 4-door variant will likely command a higher price.

TT lost its definition long ago and whatever it is now, the market's passed it by. As for a four door TT, I can't figure out what niche it would fill that's worth the bother on Audi's part. But VW sometimes works in strange and mysterious ways.

VW arrogantly believes it knows best even if the market shows them otherwise.
