Audi R8 TDI?
Wolfgang Hatz, head of engine development at Audi AG recently told Italian auto mag Quattroruote he'd like to mount the company's V12 TDI diesel in a supercar like the new R8. That desire, however, will likely rest on engineers' ability to build a high-performance version that's quieter and more roadworthy than the LeMans-winning version of the TDI, with driving responses closer to its V8 gas engine counterpart.

It's far from an admission such a car is in development -- as had been rumored early on in the R8's gossip cycle -- but it does indicate the company is at least considering amortizing its investment by putting the oil-burner more vehicles than just the Q7.

When I drove a base model rental 1.9 or 2.0 TDI A3 in Europe, I had no problems with the noise. What noise? These things are so quiet already, there's hardly any room to complain unless you're one of those people who get ticked off at the slightest whisper.

I find these newer diesels have a nice aggressive and sporty sound. Now if this is coming from a 1.9 / 20 TDI, imagine the V12 TDI. Monster. I have a feeling this might even be quicker than the gas R8 - if it can get all that torque on the ground.

I Beg To Differ

The Blasted Diesels are way noiser than their Petrol Cousins especially at Idle.

Once on the move the sound is not that noticeable but I insist on Tickover or Initial Rev-Up or Cold-Start IT IS HORRIBLE

Vehicles ive noticed this with are:
BMW 535d M- Sport (Girlfriend's)
AUDI A6 4.2d (Friend's)
MB E320 CDI (Cousin's Wife's)
AUDI A3 2.0 TDI (Brother's)
SEAT LEON 2.0 TDI (Rental, Still Got It)
VW GOLF 2.0 GT TDI (Rental, Before SEAT)

They're noisier on the outside, but its the inside that matters. On most Euro diesels I've driven, you hardly hear them. Notice I said "hardly".

Wait until the engine is warmed up and properly broken in. Someone once told me that diesels are properly broken in after 50,000 km and they become slightly quieter etc.

I Meant the A8 4.2 Diesel (Thanks for The Correction)

I just hope the Performance Hybrid Technology would Improve Quickly to the point where there would be Minimal Weight Gain over the Petrol Engines.

Or Diesel Technology to the point where they are as silent as their Petrol Counterparts

I would like to see AUDI Develop the TSI System that VW just put into the Golf/Rabbit

1.4L TSI (Turbo/Supercharged)

Diesel buyers are quite sensible. Unless you're looking for a smaller petrol engine, it would make a lot more sense to get something like a 3.5 diesel V6 over a big V8. They have plenty of mid-range torque, and get mileage that's about twice as good as their gasoline-powered counterparts.

it is just a 6 series with a new engine and a crap transmission.
anyway the r8 isn't a supercar, the 6 and sl are its main competitors.
and i don't know how a v12 diesel is green.

what are you talking about? i thought the r8 directly competes with the m6 and sl and the 911. just because it is mid-engined doesn't make it an impractical beast.
if i'm wrong i'm sorry, but i always assumed they were the r8's competitors. this discussion featured on autospies before. anyone back me up on this?

The R8 is only a competitor to the SL55 AMG, not the regular SL500. Also, the BMW M6 is the R8 competitor not the 650i.

The SL500 and BMW 650 are WAY to slow to compete with the R8.

The R8 is a true supercar, Rupert. Your posts are generally true, but in this case, it's not. The R8 is a supercar for people who don't want to blow off $300K on an LP640.

And the R8's only MAIN competitors are the 911 Turbo / C4S, AM V8 Vantage, and upcoming Lexus LF-A.

i just don't think an audi could be called a supercar. nor a merc nor a bmw too. then again i don't call a 911 (even the turbo) a supercar or an aston a supercar.
for me a supercar has to look really different, be rare and unreliable. pagani, ferrari, ascari, lambo, they are supercars. audi r8? really-good-but-not-quite-supercar.

R8 is great, something that bmw should seriously think about actually doing (rather than see these strange pictures on the web of stretched z4s or photoshopped z9s). the only thing i don't like about the R8 is the rear.
