EV Onslaught: Volkswagen Secures Enough Batteries To Make 50 Million Vehicles

We already knew Volkswagen had big plans with its electric vehicle family but a new report brings exciting news for EV enthusiasts.

Sounds extremely ambitious though securing a supply chain smart to do. Will it take 10 years to sell 50 million VW EV's, 25 years or more?

But can they meet reasonable price points and finally address build quality, reliability, and cost of repair issues?

MD, when you think about it, VW could use this transition to reposition the brand as the people's EV, an EV VW bug. They could ..... but probably won't.

Actually - VW has decided to do JUST THAT - Vette71

They have already shown a small EV that they say will sell for about $23,000. Frankly - I do not believe that they would make a profit on that car at that price - but it does give an indication of where VW would like to go

As far as the batteries - the problems remains that the projections that the cost of lithium would go down - has not happened - it has gone up - and is in short supply - being used for lots of things beyond cars. I believe it will still require a next generation battery beyond Lithium - which is an environmental hazzard to produce -

VW recast as the "people's" EV would be brilliant.

VW needs to quit talking about it and just start building them. I'll be waiting for a Tiguan PHEV or a pure EV that has 175 miles or more real world range.

That's an Audi, not VW. And my wife says no more Audis after the nonsense we had with my Q5 at a dealer. ;)

This is a China play, pure and simple. The Chinese government is going to legislate the IC vehicle out of existence.

I concur. China has found religion and getting all greeny in a big way as the people are starting to revolt on Beijing for all the air pollution. China also has to import all their oil and coal so this is a no-brainer as they have plenty of wind & solar options plus the ability to flood hundreds of ancient riverside villages to construct more hydro dams. They could also put all those pesky Tibetans on giant gerbil wheel generators to produce even more e-juice.

What I really want to know is will VW have the Rapid Rear Bumper Deployment feature like the Teslas?

Ahh yes, the secular religion of idiocy.

Despite the lithium shortage, building 50m batteries will ne easier than finding 50m customers

I heard VW purchased an option for all the lithium in the first mined asteroid.
