Tactical Error? Tesla Will Probably Go Unchallenged In US Pickup Segment

Elon Musk admits that while Tesla probably has the most exciting product roadmap in the industry today, he has a soft spot for the company’s upcoming pickup truck. In a recent appearance at the Recode Decode podcast hosted by veteran tech journalist Kara Swisher, Musk stated that the Tesla Truck would be “super futuristic,” to the point where it would not look out of place in the Blade Runner franchise.

Musk candidly added that if the first pickup, with its cyberpunk tech and features, proves too radical for the market, then Tesla would release a more conventional truck. Ultimately, it remains to be seen if the company would breach the pickup market through Elon Musk’s Blade Runner cyberpunk truck or a more conventional pickup, but one thing is sure. Tesla would soon be competing in America’s most lucrative auto segment.

Jesus GOD almighty that is ugly. Who wants to pay 200K for an unpractical, unreliable truck from a company that will not exist soon?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's a Ridgeline someone slapped a Tesla grill on, genius.

Even so, that comment was smarter than your price guesstimate and your updated "will not exist soon" re-prediction.

I'm guessing that's not the cyberpunk version;)

Tesla has over $2.2 billion debt due between now and March 2019. They are already not paying suppliers. Math is Tesla's biggest enemy now. There is no line of sight to fix this. It takes lots of cash to build more cars.

Their very expensive fixed costs are... fixed. As production increases, the margin will increase as well. They are already profitable including servicing debt.

And Uber lost 2.8 billion alone last year and has burned through some $22 billion yet is also “worth” $70 billion, more than Ford, GM, or Honda. And there is a line around the corner for VCs to invest in them, I guess they are going under pretty soon too??!

You're really overestimating what I've said. You're a paid Tesla troll, so no one takes you seriously anyway.

I don't own other people's words in my mouth. I'm far from the most vocal Tesla detractor here, but please continue with your pettiness, 2nd grade diction, and bullying ways. I do find it wildly amusing how easy it is to trigger you into fits of rage and borderline psychosis.

Looks like most of the comments came from friends of Bob Lutz! In 20 years time, there will be only a handful of petrol/gas cars and trucks on the roads. A filling station will be a scarce as Kodak film - you remember the purest saying digital would never replace film. Service stations will be for antiques for vehicles that have fan belts, oil/fuel/water pumps, diffs, trans, timing belts, and on and on... Think of the next time you go to a filling station, the smell, the cold, the heat, the wet, the snow, the money - Oh how I miss all that. Hey, did you know that only Tesla can update your car over the internet and even if the other car companies wanted to - they can't, because all upgrades and work has to be done by there dealers - to bad..

SanJoseDriver, Tesla has been profitable (barely) for one quarter. They are not servicing the debt notes due by March.

We may all be driving EVs in 20 years, likely longer, but they will not be Teslas.
The vast majority of cars are sold well below tesla price points.

The Tesla battery pack price will fall below $100/kWh soon a year or so from now - right in time for the Model Y and the Tesla Pickup releases, plus worldwide production of the Model 3 at full speed. Markets for the SUVs and pickup trucks are wide open and Tesla is well positioned to grab its shares.

Entries from Tesla only speed up the competition for EVs. Hurried announcements from the German companies are proof that they are feeling the heat. The Tesla Secret Master plan part 2 is playing out as scripted.

Rick said >>> You are correct about the update info. Only Tesla can service a Tesla because only Tesla can get acess to the computers. So no advantage for Tesla

EVisNow, what have I been wrong about? Insurance on Tesla's debt hit an all time high in October. Not a promising indicator.
Not paying suppliers will soon have them holding up shipments. One supplier has already gone out of business due to non-payment. I've seen this movie before.
Musk simply does not have enough cash to pay the billions he owes and purchase the raw materials he needs to build cars. And he has interest free cash in the form of deposits made for orders not fulfilled.
Hey, he built a decent car, EV, that others failed to do. Quite an accomplishment in itself. However, it is not a zero sum game. 88 million cars and light trucks were sold globally in the past year. 220,000 of them were teslas. Without the sizable subsidies the sales would shrink substantially. Not an opinion, in countries where they ended, Tesla sales shrunk to nearly zero. EVs are not truly viable now nor in the near future nor are they taking over the industry.
Major manufacturers - GM record profit last quarter - are not building them today because they cannot, it is because it is not profitable. They will enter in slowly and with intentionally limited quantities.
So quit acting superior because you bought a tesla.

Article states " 240-volt connection for power tools, and a maximum towing capacity of 300,000 pounds."

So, Tesla's little pick up truck can tow 300,000 pounds? Can it fly, too?

Tesla will be here six years later, I guarentee it. Other companies and investors won't just sit by and watch them struggle when they see that they can't even keep up with demand. Secondly, the tech and infrastructure is so far ahead of the Big 3 lux brands it's a joke at this point. Let that sink in...3 huge BILLION dollar nameplates that don't have a single competitor on the market some 5 years after the Model S, which is outselling their flagships in their home countries! Now their "cheapest" model which is currently selling a good 25-30k over base is selling like crazy and you seriously think that in 180 days they'll be gone? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
