Dodge Finds there Is Plenty Of Money Out There IF You Build The RIGHT Kind Of Retro Vehicle

Like with fashion, design trends in the automotive industry tend to be cyclical, as proven by all the retro-themed cars on sale in the last 20 years.

Despite many iconic nameplates built around retro designs, few have proven to be as popular as the third-generation Dodge Challenger, launched in 2008 and still putting up very strong numbers, while undergoing only minor cosmetic changes along the way.

518,000 units in a single year is a serious amount of sales. Mind you F150's do almost twice that I think. But nothing sells like a pick up truck the USA. FCA should keep milking this cow as long as people line up outside the barn.

Idiocy: "...few have proven to be as popular as the third-generation Dodge Challenger..." Literally NO ONE counts the Dodge Sapporo as a Challenger.

The Challenger and to a lesser extent the Charger is an example of brilliant marketing.

A Charger styled to look like the 1968 with 4 doors would be easy to do and it would likely increase Charger sales.

The Mustang DESPERATELY needs more heritage on its front end.

The Challenger is tremendous fun.

@MD Agreed. I would love Mustang to look more like a 1968 Fastback or 1967 GT500KR. But I am sure everyone has a favourite year to emulate. It is took thick in the middle. Not sure what could be done re-crash and safety, but a bit more retro and Mustangy would be great. It echo's the past quite well in the interior, the exterior just needs the same attention.

The 2005 Mustang got it right. The 2010 was a disaster. The 2015 was a home run from the windshield back, but the front was a Fusion. Graft on a "2005" mindset to the 2015 body and you have a winner. The recent update took the wrong and made it worse.

Dodge has filled the void - aggressive big coupes, sedans, SUVs - with decent interiors & powerful powertrains. Reasonable pricing too.

Still don't understand how FCA could let the Chrysler brand continue without a large/midsize SUV for so long. missing out on so much easy money.

Sergio Marchionne was a full-on idiot is the answer. He killed sedans which was arguably a shrewd move, but then he filled the void with NOTHING.

The Renegade effort resulted in the 500X, so why not a small Chrysler to battle the Buick Encore.
The Cherokee should have spawned an LWB Chrysler.
The Jeep Grand Commander should be on sale here either as a Jeep or a Dodge Journey.
Where is the Durango Hellcat?
Where is the Jeep Wagoneer? No prototypes are running around.
Where is the next Grand Cherokee? No prototypes are running around.

MD: I have to agree.

Both the Chrysler & Dodge lineups were mostly demolished. The failure of the 200 didn't create any renewed vision to at least offer something "interesting". To be honest, I liked the top trim 200 w/V6, AWD, NAV, dark wheel pkg. It is still a bit of a descent used car buy for anybody. It just needed a turbo or SC V6 & maybe some lower trim adds to amp-up the "style" factor.

Still don't understand why FCA hadn't used any of the Jeeps to make Chrysler brand variants. AND WHERE THE HECK IS THE LARGE JEEP?!! Squandered potential.

The article says 518,000 SINCE 2008! Have driven both a Hellcat and a Demon and each was a blast to drive. Huge power, great look, great fun, low cost. Hit the go pedal and hang on while looking and feeling retro.

@PUGPROUD- You are correct. My bad. 518k in 8 years is not a lot of units really. But good numbers I suppose in the world of muscle cars.

Those are good numbers for such an outdated car and it was outdated on introduction.
