DRIVEN: 2019 Silverado 4 Cylinder - Does It Have What It Takes To Survive In The Market?
“A four cylinder?!” full-size truck customers will cry upon visiting their local Chevy truck dealer after this fall. In the half-ton pickup space, an engine with so few cylinders is unheard of. But after driving the 2019 Chevy Silverado 2.7 Turbo, I’m not sure it should be, even if I’m not entirely sold on this particular truck.

GM really really Blew it on the 4 Cylinder

It might have a case IF it had greatly superior fuel economy - but it does not- and while being a 4 cylinder is not really the issue - being a turbo is. Frankly - they will eventually have to put that motor in the Colorado - where it likely would do well.

Now GM is spouting that in real life - the 4 Cylinder gets better economy than the number show - SURE SURE. If it did - you would expect them to recertify the motor for the numbers to show it. I really cannot imagine anyone really wanting this engine EVEN OVER The V-6

Compare this to the F150 2.7L v6 EcoBoost engine that gets better MPG 20/26/22 with more power 325HP and 400ft lbs....!!!

If you want H. R. Huffandpuff (vintage allusion) under the hood fine, but that turbo 4--if it is pulling something is going to tend to be spooled up much of the time and it most decidedly will blow a head gasket faster than the venerable V8.

And at 75mph/120Kmh what is this thing going to rev at -3500 rpms? Sure you may save a little fuel but it will come at the cost of other repairs like head gaskets as Matt said or blown turbos and quicker cylinder wear...

I have always had F150 trucks for work purposes and mine will always be a long lasting N/A V8 and I will ride them into the ground with 300-500KM which is easy to do with proper maintenance. I doubt no turbo 4 or 6 could do this as cost effectively long term.
