Has The TESLA EFFECT Reached All-new BMW Designs? All-new X5 HEARTS Model S?
You know, a funny thing happened on the way home from the office today. As I mentioned on the previous thread, I spotted the all-new, 2019 BMW X5.

While it's not the first time I saw one — I previously visited BMW of Manhattan to behold the 2019 X5 in all of its glory — it did mark the first time I saw one outside of an auto show or on a showroom floor. And, as we always say the setting makes all the difference.

SEE the 2019 BMW X5 on the road for the FIRST time.

Tonight was definitely different. While following the X5, which was lit up, I was able to compare it to other vehicles.

First was the current-gen Cadillac Escalade. The X5 appears larger than the previous generation and has more on-road presence. Second was the last-gen BMW X5. Seeing both of these X5s side-by-side and lit up was a nice coincidence. And, if I am honest, the last-gen X5 looks dated with its L-shaped taillights. The boxier shape of the all-new X5 makes it seem more masculine than what was previously delivered. Lastly, the X5 got right up next to a Tesla Model S. With both vehicles blaring the LED taillights, I noticed something interesting: The X5's all-new taillights that ditch the traditional L-shape look eerily familiar to the Tesla Model S' when lit up at night.

Coincidence? I am not so sure.

What say you, Spies? Has the Tesla effect rubbed off on the all-new X5's design?

I suspect it is a coincidence - the design language of the X5 is completely different (much more 2018) than the Model S and since the tail-lights are nicely integrated into the design, I think it is likely that they are a product of the design process overall.

Designers do not start with a generic, "U" shaped taillight illumination and then design the whole vehicle around that. Just a coincidence.

When the Tesla came out, for example, the taillights reminded me of a Kia or Hyundai taillight design of the time for example - the Tesla illumination shape is a generic "U" on its side.

Now that the backlog has been fulfilled, model 3s are selling at the rate of 1000 per week.
The Tesla effect is not influencing BMW design and the German boardrooms are certainly not nervous.
What is it with you Muskateers that you are not satisfied that he made a workable EV, but that everyone else is "scared" and all other manufacturers will be out of business soon.
The tail lights have a vaguely similar shape, BFD.

Wait - "now that the backlog has been fulfilled"..?

Did Tesla put out a press release on that? If so, that's big news. Tell us more. Facts, please.

They're selling 7k/week, not sure what sort of crazy math you used to pull 1k out of the air.

Round wheels!! What a game changer! Now all the other manufacturers are panicking and will switch to round wheels!

The more mass market cars change the more they look the same.

And I suppose the Cadillac Escalade tail lights were influenced by Star Wars lightsabers.

If you want to get a real comparison - the Model 3 rear actually looks like a contoured version of the Second Generation Acura Integra (1989)

THere is little that is new in styling - and these cars pretty much all have traits in common. I'll bet that not only does the Model 3 have round wheels just like my 1955 Buick Special- but I would bet it has a round steering wheel too like My 1955 Buick SPecial - and I will bet the Brake pedal on it looks a lot like the one on a 1955 Buick Special as well.

It may not have a round wheel for long. The roadster design will pretty much be the standard starting with the Model Y (there was a reference to this at the annual shareholder meeting).
