Analysts Warn GM Plant Closures And Layoffs Are Just The First Step
General Motors' monumental announcement on Monday that it plans to close up to five assembly plants in North America and slash its workforce will only partially close the gap between capacity and demand for the automaker's sedans, according to a Reuters analysis of industry production and capacity data.

Sales of traditional cars in North America have been declining for the past six years and are still withering. After GM ends production next year at factories in Michigan, Ohio and Ontario, it will still have four U.S. car plants, all operating at less than half of rated capacity, according to figures supplied by LMC Automotive.

It obviously isn't obvious to a lot of politicians! They would try to preserve buggy whip and blacksmith jobs as the automobile market took off. Change is hard.

GM will only have 4 US plants? They reported record earnings for the 3rd quarter.

They likely see those record earnings as fleeting event unless they change. Plus you need good earnings to cover for all the write offs that are necessary as you right size the company to the current market conditions.

Too bad it wasn't Obama that did it - IT was GEORGE W. Bush

Bush gave GM a loan to get them thru and said that the new president should make any decision about GM's fate. Obama put together the team that developed the GM's bankruptcy plan.

"Mary Barra has to be fired."

Precisely what is she doing that the other U.S. based players are not?

Please clarify for us.

On her watch...

She allowed Cadillac to get even worse off by hiring an idiot and then taking forever to can him when it was apparent he was clueless.

The new trucks are a total face plant failure and anyone could have known that by looking at them.

Their new crossovers are middle of the road for their segments and nothing that says excellence.

Styling is a disaster across all brands.

Excellent show cars are produced but there so clearly is no intent on having them result in production cars.

GM is so far behind on hybrids and electrification it's laughable.

hearing crickets from MBguy.... Not to mention that Barra was essentially appointed by the previous administration. There were so many others she passed over for the role. The thought of a female running GM was intoxicating to Barry Soetoro and his band of trouble makers.... its not turning out to well and she needs to go asap...
