GM Plant Closure Sends Strong Warning To Unions

GM Plant Closure Sends Strong Warning To Unions

Nearly a decade after its federally backed bankruptcy and bailout, General Motors this week once again became a political football by announcing the potential closure of up to four U.S. plants, and another in Canada, that could impact thousands of American workers.

GM didn't need to make the announcement at this time. It could have waited to negotiate over the fate of the U.S. plants during collective bargaining next year with the UAW, which it must contractually do anyway to close a plant.

The unions have been scamming and feeding off the workers since the 1930's.

It should send a strong message to folks who are considering buying a GM product :-/ GM is on the ropes... again.

I guess those multi-million dollar bonuses that GM execs gave themselves for securing the last bailout didn't make them manage the company any better.

I do not begrudge bonus's for highly paid executives who are responsible for billions of dollars in mfg. and hundreds or thousands of employees, as I don't begrudge pathetic, whiney actors who make millions more than the executives for making crappy movies then fancy themselves to tell everyone else how it ought to be, or former community organizers who get huge book deals, I do fault the board and the current CEO. The current executive (CEO) was essentially appointed by the previous administration as "a woman running GM would be a glass ceiling breaker" not to mention qualifications... why should they manage the company better when their jobs were given to them and she was clearly not the best person for the job? Typical liberal response: make a statement but blame others when results matter.

Rick Waggoner opened China for GM and did everything he could to save the company, (a company destroyed by UAW legacy costs) before a community organizer took pleasure in firing a very accomplished executive. Mary Barra was set up to succeed with an absolutely clean sheet of paper and this is where we are now?

GM, IMO, is in trouble again due to inept leadership and they're scrambling to keep the ship afloat. I think she is cutting the NA based footprint and will be seeking lower cost areas to make vehicles, probably their state-of-the-art Chinese plants. Funny how so many other car companies are investing here but GM just can’t seem to get it right. She needs to be fired today! They should not be allowed to move production anywhere w/o tariffs, period. GM makes only 2 world class cars, the Vette and CTS-V, everything else is forgettable...

The tariff situation should be really simple to solve. You can bring in as many Chinese cars as you build in the USA, but each additional car from China carries a 100% tariff.

Irony: Trump is the biggest advocate and protector of American jobs in 40 years and the UAW is violently (literally and figuratively) against Trump.

The UAW needs to "walk away" at this point or they are dead as dead can be.

Bloomberg: Ford Seeks to Skirt Tariffs by Speeding China-Built Lincoln Plan......
Motor Authority: Lincoln wants to hit the gas pedal on Chinese production due to tariffs!

Trumps tariffs simply level the field. China is forcing companies to build in China and hire Chinese with tariffs... Trump would rather American companies build here and hire Americans. Those who oppose him are arrogant ignorant ideologues... and perhaps unAmerican if they prefer to see the continued export of American mfg, jobs and wealth. Sure seems like China has a “China 1st policy!” But to some that’s ok for communists...?

So.....the UAW turns its attention to Tesla, perhaps encouraged by GM?

Looks like a fun debate... typical working man/union bashing... just one thing that maybe you can help clarify for me? I thought Trump had a Russia first policy??
