#LAAutoShow: The BMW M5 Competition Shows Up In M Performance Parts, Painted Bright Red And Gives 00R E39 Flashbacks...
Even though there's been some dilution to the BMW M brand, I must admit: I am still a fan. That's pretty obvious given that I own one but I think it needs to be said.

That's because I am seeing more M badges popping up on BMW vehicles. It's reached a fever pitch, in my opinion.

And — to me — if it's not an M, it's pretty much an entirely different vehicle.

To further my point, just see what BMW unpacked at this year's LA Auto Show. It's the new M5 Competition but with some M Performance parts added as the cherry on top. A lot of it is "all show and no go," but I will say it definitely helps make this M5 pop.

What really does it for me though is the color combination. Painted a bright red and paired with an interior eerily similar to the E39 M5's caramel, I started having flashbacks. Good ones. Something tells me I am not alone as the E39 market is quite strong. Just go see what good examples are selling for today.

That said, I've got to ask: Is this M5 Competition lighting your fire? Let us know in the comments below.

I am ok with carbon roof any day, but carbon grill trim and exhaust pipes are just tacky in my view. The tiny lip on the truck lid is also a Pep Boys special treatment. A carbon wheel set to reduce unsprung weight would have been a better way to go.

I cannot help but see a wannabe Giulia Quadrapleggio because of the similarity in tacky details.

Fail... who’s idea was it to have red on caramel interior, yuck take it back to the store you got it from and keep your receipt

It was inevitable that BMW (And Mercedes with AMG) would use the M designation to sell more cars - since these are generally the highest price - most profitable cars they make. At the same time - the M cars do indeed have superior performance to regular BMWs - and for those looking for the ultimate in performance - this is about as good as BMW gets.

Unfortunately for BMW - they have gone over the line in many of these cars - they tend to drive much poorer in every day conditions that their competitors - so If you want the ability to use the car for normal transportation - there are better choices.

Personally, I dig it.

- the M Performance parts though. They're silly and, frankly, immature for a car of this nature and price point.

I don't think this body style would look good in Imola red.

@Agent00R - Red is fine on a 3 series but looks a bit off on a 5 series or X5. I have seen both in my travels. Same goes on a 6 series or a bright colour on a 7 series. Looks like you are trying too hard. But life is short. If you want a red car, go for it.

I typically would agree with you but there have been stunning red colors by BMW over the past, say, 20 years that worked on big body vehicles.

E.g., Imola Red on the E39 M5, E38 740i and E53 4.8is looked killer.

In the case of this M5, the bright red — to me — works. Would I buy it that way though? No.

Had from new a 1991 red 535i that not only looked sharp but handled so sweetly for a family sedan. Miss that car.

Was it Hellrot?

Looks good! Definitely better than the colors you see everyday, and the carbon parts are tastefully done without being too tacky. Of course, some of the old geezers here will think otherwise, but who cares about them anyway.

Yes it was Hellrot. The car is a legend in our family because my then 17 year old son borrowed it from my wife and about 5 miles from home got it stuck in reverse by trying to speed shift and had to drive it home completely in reverse. My wife reamed him out royally to his face but latter told me laughingly that she was so pleased that he finally learned how to back up. She then called the dealer to pickup the car saying she had no idea what went wrong. The dealer put a new transmission in and sent the broken one back to Germany to try to figure out what went so wrong. We got word back later that the guys in Munich could not figure out how it could have happened. They never thought to think it might be a teenage kid showing off for his friends.

Very clear the design intention here is to have a big mouth under the big nose
