Mercedes-Benz PRICES The All-new GLE-Class — Is It Too HIGH, Too LOW or Just RIGHT?
As the sport-utility vehicle wars continue to heat up with more models coming to fruition, the tried and true still stay strong. An all-new BMW X5 has hit showrooms as of last month and the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is on the way.

The Q7 is just cruising.

Although we'll have to wait until Spring 2019 to see the three-pointed star GLE350 and GLE450 4MATICs hit the street, we have some good news. The Germans announced pricing this week.

The GLE-Class will start at $53,700*.

This is competitive to the Audi Q7, which starts at $53,550* and quite a bit cheaper than the all-new, 2019 BMW X5 that carries a base price of $60,700*.

*These prices do NOT include title, taxes and fees.

Having said that, we've got to ask the obvious question: Is the all-new GLE priced too HIGH, too LOW or just RIGHT?

What say you, Spies?

Mercedes-Benz's press release follows:

All-new Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV to start at $53,700

Mercedes-Benz Announces Pricing on 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE

With a wealth of innovations, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE is poised to set new benchmarks in its segment at an extremely competitive price. For example, the revolutionary new E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL system is the world's most intelligent SUV suspension developed by Mercedes-Benz and powered in part by the 48-volt battery. The driver assistance systems also take another step forward with Active Stop-and-Go Assist that enables the GLE to recognize traffic jams at an early stage and support the driver in stop-and-go traffic. The interior is even more spacious and comfortable, with a newly available third row seat. The new GLE is equipped with the intuitively-operated infotainment system Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) with Voice Control and natural language understanding, and introduces the new MBUX Interior Assistant, which supports operating intentions by recognizing hand and arm movements. The exterior design not only exudes presence and power, but also sets a new standard for aerodynamics in the SUV segment. The all-new GLE lineup includes the GLE 350, with an MSRP starting at $53,700,* the GLE 350 4MATIC starting at $56,200,* and the GLE 450 4MATIC starting at $61,150.*

The new GLE benefits from exciting new additional standard features including MBUX with Voice Control, dual-12.3" digital instrument cluster and 12.3" touchscreen multimedia displays, Mercedes-Benz Navigation, LED headlamps, HANDS-FREE ACCESS and a host of safety features, including Blind Spot Assist and Active Parking Assist.

Newly optional features such as the enlarged panoramic sliding sunroof with a 50% larger viewing area, 4-Zone Climate Control and Inductive Wireless Charging make the in-car experience even more luxurious for the driver and passengers. The new 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission on all GLE models allows for faster, smoother and more efficient driving.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE will be launched with a variety of engine offerings, including a 2.0L Inline-4 turbo engine for the GLE 350 and GLE 350 4MATIC that produces 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The new 3.0L inline six-cylinder turbo engine with EQ Boost in the GLE 450 4MATIC produces 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and is systematically electrified with 48-volt technology. The Integrated- Starter Generator (ISG) is responsible for functions such as EQ Boost and energy recuperation, while allowing fuel savings that were previously reserved for high- voltage hybrid technology.

Available on the GLE 450 4MATIC, the sophisticated E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension uses Road Surface Scan and a curve inclination function that make an extraordinary level of comfort possible. It is the only system on the market where the spring and damping forces can be individually controlled at each wheel. The suspension also introduces and enhances off-road capabilities. For example, the new Free-driving mode can quickly and automatically help rock the GLE free by raising and lowering the suspension level if it becomes bogged down.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 4MATIC and GLE 450 4MATIC will be available in the U.S. starting in spring 2019, followed by the GLE 350 in summer 2019.

$53K isn't bad, but with the Aviator coming...

Too much $$$ for a 4 cylinder anything. I don’t care about the turbos. Right around the 3 year mark it’ll start running like a 4 cylinder but you’re stuck with a 1000 car payment. I’m good.

This is why you always lease bling.

I agree with you however the soccer moms, housewives, young professionals, and Instagram models that make up the majority of consumers for this segment could careless. Their top priorities are phone connectivity, ease to access/fold down rows, back up camera, and fuel economy.

Fortunately, the GLE 450 v6 isn’t too far off the 350’s price

Yes, too high for a 4-cycynder with some mid 200's HP. But it has MB badge and it sits high so that will do the trick.

I was thinking I'd get my comment in before Car4Life gave his adoring praise to MB. Its commonly known he prays to the star and there is nothing this company does that is wrong. I wasn't fast enough but I"m with Tauron as a 4cyl in all Mercedes cars below this one is garbage. The motor is buzzy and weak and IMO not world class. I would have zero interest in the C,E, GLC or GLE with this 4 and the vinyl seats MB puts in their sub $50K cars. Everything is optional that should be std on a luxury car. MB is no longer the cost is no object engineered masterpieces they once were, the just have the star...

When I see these types of vehicle combinations (loaded w/base or basic engine & 2WD) - always makes me think the consumer got duped somehow. When I pay at that level of coin...I want content, performance, & power. Not just 1 or 2 out of the 3.

I like the GLE450, that should be very slick overall. But yes if I'm getting a heavy midsize SUV, it should be loaded & have at least a strong or turbo 6-cyl or V8 & AWD. Nissan could sell more SUVs if they used a turbo-V6 option.

If I said something untrue, happy to hear it. You did notice I said they used to be unquestionably the finest cars made, they're not anymore and IMO don't offer value for the $.

Don't bother w/the shirt but happy to send you a sweet Christmas Sweater!

The numbers don’t lie xjug, you are entitled to your own opinion and not your own facts. While I’m not a fan of a 4 cylinder in a Benz, The Truth is the average consumer doesn’t know the difference and praises the difference in fuel economy, I mean it’s their 4 cylinder models that have kept them #1 in the US....just sayin...and globally along with diesels

Save that Christmas sweater and put it in your piggy bank for a v6...I hear they’ve got some awesome certified pre-owned deals

The facts are that about 80% of Mercedes sedans & SUVs are leased and the payment is set just right to move them. The GLC lacks character it looks like a Hyundai, the GLK was much better especially w the 6.

You're such a joke.... and the defense of your employer is admiarable but your emotional lust for MB is clouds your judgement. Ultimately you have your opinion as does everyone else. Fact is the 4 sucks and its everywhere in the lineup. If such a pathetic mill was in a Cadillac it would be a laughing stock and say how its unworthy of a luxury car,(Caddy's 4 is actually a much better mill but I'm not about 4's in Lux Cars) but since there is a star out front it sells. Mercedes has created such an ora that folks want one and to lease a $60K C Class with a crappy 4 and vinyl seats for $499. pmo well thats doable. You can have it but they don't make a single car I'd have an interest in except the AMG GT. There is no question they're fine cars but have nothing to offer me.

The best thing Mercedes does IMO is their superb customer service and excellent customer experience. For years Jaguar had horrible cars but their Customer Service was always in the top 5, and that helps sell vehicles. I have never had anything but a pleasant experience everytime I've been to an MB dealer. Other Luxury mfrs, not so much.

I have a 350 4matic on order...wish the 2wd was available at launch to save $2500 but my lease is coming up.

Why don't you stall the lease for several months until the 2WD debuts?

I am sure your dealer could work it out...

Cutting a deal to add months onto a lease is stunningly easy because it's free money for the leasing company.

As expected, base price means base model, good luck finding one. Premium I with premium sound (bundled) is another $5k. And 99% GLE350 will have at least that and of course there will be other extras... So $60k & up... I’m more interested in the GLE450 if it will break $80s fully loaded with the new suspension.

Premium 1, which includes premium sound, is $1800. The new E-active suspension with airmatic is about $9700 combined though but hardly anyone will actually get that.

MB vs. BMW inline 6's will make the comparisons even closer. New X5's interior also vastly improved from previous generations.

Gee - right around the ACTUAL selling price of a TEsla Model 3 - one that you can actually buy.
And you get a real premium SUV

In comparison - this is a no brainer.

Today's four cylinders are not the same as yesterday's 4 cylinders. $53K is reasonable for the package you are getting.

But the modern huff and puff 4 cylinders are starting to show head gasket issues when they are put in vehicles two weight classes too high.

Auto prices are on the rise especially from European manufactures...higher material costs, higher technology funding, higher tariffs, higher wages, higher interest rates, higher inflation. Do you buy now before prices really pick up steam or do you wait for large discounts from manufacturers trying to juice sales in a slowing more competitive market? Buyers will decide.

Not sure why MB just have 6 turbo as base like X5. Leave the 4 cycl to GLC.

It's an Inline 6 engine, not a V6. Think Supra 2JZ. Dump the 4 cyl, Toyota made that mistake with the 5th gen 4Runner with a 4 cyl engine. Just not worth it.
