Rebirth Of An Icon? Porsche Hints At An Electric 911

Porsche appears to be set on expediting the electrification of its fleet, with CEO Olliver Blume recently noting that the company would be raising the numbers of the Taycan’s initial production due to strong demand for the vehicle. Apart from this, Blume also hinted at what could very well be the eventual release of an electrified Porsche 911.

Blume’s statements were related to weekly German business news publication WirtschaftsWoche during an interview. The CEO noted that in Norway, where Porsche usually expects to sell around 600 vehicles per year, the company had already accepted almost 3,000 reservations for its first all-electric car. With such a strong, positive reception for the vehicle, Porsche has opted to adjust the Taycan’s initial production run, which was originally set at 20,000 units per year.

A 911-E is ok by me. Just no piped in engine sounds please.

You're welcome. Porsche wouldn't be doing this until 2030 if it wasn't for pressure from Tesla.

Tesla really has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with the forced government mandates, banning ICE powered vehicles by x date under the banner of Climate Change. These mandates can also be reversed when push back comes from the populous, (see Paris) which is spreading. GM lost a billion dollars on the development of the Impact when the California CARB rescinded their Zero emissions mandate.

That billion dollars is a drop in the bucket compared to amount spent by auto manufacturers trying to meet those mandates today even in the face a more plentiful supply of oil and lukewarm acceptance by the market.

Tesla Roadster 2 has everything to do with Porsche 911 going fully electric.

Porsche already lost many battles to Telsa, from the Model S in straight line acceleration to the Model 3 in autocross venues (handling test). What happens when the Roadster 2 comes out and dominates the high speed road courses ? Porsche has to come up with something competitive, otherwise it's history for Porsche.

The BIGGER story, is that Porsche has openly stated that electrification is not yet at a state in which electrifying the venerable 911 would be a satisfactory experience. So yeah... maybe... perhaps... someday... in the unknown future, the 911 *might* get electrified.

For now, enjoy the splendor of converting hydrocarbons into motion and superb noise :-)

No it is not pressure from Tesla as far as the 911 goes. Porsche is already responding to Tesla with the Taycan and now Audi with the E-tron. The 911 is going to be the last hold out. The reality is that this is really the direction VAG is going. A lot of this change in direction is as a result of the diesel scandal. VAG wants to move away from petrol/diesel cars and has already stated that the final petrol engine cars will be out in 2026. There are 3 factories dedicated to electric production being built or modified. VAG will have 2 EV's by this coming new year and a sub 23 grand EV by 2023. The only question I have is will they have enough infrastructure in place to support the large scale EV production? Back to the 911. Porsche has already indicated that within 5 years the 911 is going hybrid. There is already room due to the smaller PDK box. So yes the 911 is going EV at one point but certainly not right now.
