GM Meets With Ohio Senators - Ignores Claims It Owes Workers After Bailout
Ohio senators Sherrod Brown and Robert Portman urged General Motors CEO Mary Barra to accelerate contract talks with union officials and decisions on where to build new products so the state’s Lordstown plant can continue operating.

Barra, meeting lawmakers Wednesday on Capitol Hill, said the company was focused on finding transfer and retraining opportunities for some of the 6,000 workers impacted by last week’s decision to discontinue making several slow-selling models such as the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid sedan.

The GM chief deflected criticism that the company owes it to workers to keep them employed after accepting a multi-billion rescue package from the federal government a decade ago.

Attitude is everything. GM could have said to survive we have to grow by designing products that are segment killers. That would have helped keep the plants full.

On what planet does GM (or any company) have an obligation to create jobs?

Its obligation is to the shareholders, period, and if GM could fire every factory employee and replace them with a robot they'd do it tomorrow morning.

@MD- That isn't socialism, it is naked aggressive capitalism at its core. GM and others would get rid of everyone on the production floor if cars could be made as effectively. What do you think the banking community is doing with all these new phone based banking apps? They want to push every interaction into the cloud so you can do your banking and change your insurance etc all without people. Just you and the Ai based chat-bot. Eliminating FTE's is the goal as is boosting profits. They don't care about these folks at all. They are in the way of change.

^^When Socialists get called on the carpet they blame their idiocy on others.

#Not Sorry
#Not Buying Your BS

You're also trying to use totally unrelated issues to prove your point and in debate we call that #conceding

I will tell you what GM and others who were helped by the Gov't are thinking... How many quarters ago was that? And what have you done for me lately? There is no loyalty in business. Just the bottom line and the need to survive to the next quarter and the next fiscal year keeping shareholders happy and creditors at bay.

How can you have it so exactly backwards? A Socialist would be attempting to mandate that a company like GM needs to employ thousands and keep factories running even if they are below capacity and not needed.

A capitalist would say exactly what I said. The company does not exist to create jobs, it exists to deliver a financial return to its owners.

#hypocrite You're not a capitalist. You're a bigoted, intolerant, hateful, bullying socialist. So, stop pretending to take the moral high road when your kind has no morality.

It's pretty clear that you don't know what capitalist means. Or socialist. Or hypocrite. You seem to be just an absolute dunce with a computer.
