The Right Move? Acura To Hold Off On New SUVs, Wants To Fix Sedans First
The all-new 2019 Acura RDX crossover has seen an enthusiastic market reception in the United States.

Following its June launch, the RDX posted the sixth straight monthly sales record in November, with 2018 deliveries so far exceeding 2017 by 22 percent. The sales success is a sign Acura has got the redesign of its premium compact crossover right. The Honda-owned brand says the 2019 RDX is attracting younger buyers with its A-Spec trim as well as stealing sales from European luxury brands.

Good for Acura, it shows that they don't want to be like Cadillac, Lincoln but whole as a brand. Now just get MDX redesign/refresh and should buy them time. But fixing sedans is not easy.

The RDX is a complete homerun for Acura and is stealing sales from European brands. I agree Acura wants to replicate this success across the entire lineup, but outside of the NSX, they essentially have 3 sedans and 2 SUVs. In today's SUV-crazed world, they would be smart to ditch a sedan and replace it with at least one if not two more SUVs.

While I find it totally boring your right, its a hit. It also just relegated the new Cadillac XT4 to 2nd place in a recent comparison.... not good for Cadillac especially when the review was RDX, XT4 and some Infiniti. Caddy is not in the conversation with Audi, BMW or Mercedes... pathetic.

I'm not sure why they can't do both: Add SUV's (like a larger 3-row above the MDX, and a smaller 2-row below the RDX) while fortifying their sedans.
Acura dug themselves into this hole b/c they had too many bean counters vs. business-forward, aggressive thinkers. I'm fearful this is another example.
Granted, maybe they're thinking more smartly than everyone else. If many other automakers are abandoning the car market, that is a lot of market share to pick up.

For starter, they can bring back something fun and affordable like the Integra.

Restyle the Civic Type R as an Acura for starters and bring into dealerships hordes of enthusiasts with an aesthetic eye....myself included.

Acura suffers from a lack of legitimacy and sedans are simply NOT how to play the game.

They desperately need better styling and they need to go with crossovers first.

I'd kill all the current sedans and make the Precision Concept as the Acura Precision (EV) for their top sedan.

I'd replace the MDX with a commodious 3-row crossover named Legend.

I'd do an Acura Passport as the Acura Mythos (synonym of legend).

I'd replace the RDX with an Acura Saga (synonym of legend).

I'd leverage the Civic to create a turbo-AWD stunning-looking coupesedan called Integra.

Thanks. I think they are more evocative than RDX, MDX, ILX, TLX, RLX.

they need an integra replacement. as a hatch NOT coupe or sedan. then they would be really winning. and dont say that it wont sell because even old ones sell like hotcakes when available. it was a GREAT car. unlike every sedan they currently sell

For what ever reason Acura has never fully been able to distinguish itself as a true luxury player. Unlike Audi Acura has always suffered from the tarted up Honda label. Toyota has had more success with Lexus. I think their styling has always struggled compared to their competitors. Kia and Hyundai seem to have been more successful as they have adopted RWD. The Stinger and the Genises G70 are competitive vehicles in their market segment. I think they should focus more on CUV's at this point.

Agreed about style. The new RDX is by no means ugly and it is selling well but it is also borderline invisible.

1. fix that grille
2. Nix the RL
3. Juice up the TLX
