NAME and SHAME: PICK The UGLIEST New Vehicle Of 2018

As we're wrapping up the end of 2018, Spies, we're starting to think of things like the BEST and WORST rides of the year. And, as always, we're starting to think of the successes and failures of the past 12 months.

That includes sales. That includes all-new vehicle debuts. It also includes vehicle design.

After thinking back, we were thinking it may be best to start off with something that's pretty straightforward. That's why we want to know: WHICH vehicle is the UGLIEST new vehicle of 2018?

While I am usually the first to say that design is a subjective thing, I think we can all agree that some autos are just outright awful. Take, for example, the Pontiac Aztek. Although it has had a cult-like following since launch, I have yet to meet one person who thought it was, genuinely, a great looking product.

Having said that, we want you to name the UGLIEST new vehicle of the year. So, what's it going to be, Spies?

Lots of low-volume ugly ones, but the ugliest volume vehicle is the new Lexus RX350L.

Adding the extra room to the third row by making the rear bigger completely screws up the proportions of a vehicle that was already not a looker.

Second place in the volume category is the Land Rover Discovery - again, from the off-center license plate on the rear hatch to the proportions, to the pus-filled zit that the rear has become to accommodate the third row, the Discovery is really really offensive. To see how truly ugly it is, go to the Land Rover website and compare the Discovery Sport (which is well-proportioned and a generally good-looking vehicle though it basically a tarted-up Ford Escape) to the full-blown Discovey and you can see the Discovery's significant aesthetic failures. Its bad.

The Lexus RX and its explosion of gratuitous character lines and surfaces and the gaping maw spindle grill is probably the ugliest luxury vehicle on the road. The design has all the subtlety and charm of one of the bugs from Starship Troopers. Toyota in general makes some uniquely ugly vehicles.

I am with all of you on the Lexus RX. Everytime I see one on the road I cringe. I am sure the interior is nice and the vehicle offers a soft smooth ride but its too hard to get over that exterior.

The face is especially bad, but the RXL is just vile looking everywhere. Why is it that Toyota cannot design a Palisade for Lexus?

Its funny you say that as I felt the Palisade was a poor design from Hyundia in the save vein as the Lexus RX. I love the Tuscon and Telluride but I am not feeling the Palisade at all.

While the Palisade has some strangeness here and there, overall it's a handsome design. The same cannot be said for the RX/RXL. I prefer the Palisade to the Telluride actually.

The BMW 8 Series wins it for me. The design grows OFF of me every time I see it; I struggle to find one single attractive element on it.

Also, the Honda Clarity (I think was new for 18) is truly hideous.

I think most EV's, Hybrids. and plugin hybrids seem to like the "uglybud" for some reason. The Tesla model 3 is beyond hideous. I don't what its range is or how quick it is. Ugly is as Ugly does in my opinion. Audi has proven with the E-tron you can make a very attractive looking EV. Frankly I am waiting for the after market companies that will convert a 60's or 70's sedan or sports car into a reliable usable EV.

Any Prius is far and away the worst, inside and out. The RX-L is a distant second, but still second. The interior is as much of a miss-mash as the exterior.

Toyota and Lexus cars and SUVs designs went from one extreme to another. From Toyota extreme boring to Toyota extreme ugly. Wish they would hire designers who knew how to make cars and SUVs descent to good looking. Their designs are deal klllers for me, reliable or not I could not drive and live with an ugly car or SUV for any period of time.
