Genesis Does The Homework - But Would You Choose It Over An Audi, Tesla Or A BMW?

The 2019 Genesis G70 is one of the three finalists for North American Car of the Year and initial impressions have largely been positive. Those sentiments are echoed by MotorWeek which recently took a spin in the BMW 3-Series competitor.

Loosely based on the Kia Stinger, the G70 is the brand’s highly-anticipated entry-level model and it faces the tough task of battling more prestigious rivals. Thankfully, Genesis appears to have done their homework as MotorWeek says the car has a high quality interior and Lexus levels of attention to detail.

A Genesis would have to be at least 25% below the price of a Lexus - for me to consider it instead of a Lexus (which I consider to be 2nd tier premium along with Volvo, Audi, Infiniti, Acura, and Buick). Even then - when buying a premium car - you buy a car for its prestige as much as anything else - and buying a Genesis instantly identifies the buyer as someone who is TOO CHEAP - or TOO POOR to buy the real thing. Sorry - but not in what is left of my lifetime.

Totally agree except for the “top poor, too cheap” comment, most of the wealthiest ppl I know drive “2nd tier” models or older luxury models in an effort to not show off their wealth and don’t care for the attention or prestige because it’s all in their net worth and properties lol

It's a great first attempt... no, I wouldn't have any problem driving it. But the linked article uses Motorweek as the basis. Yech, decent enough show but they always come across as too "family friendly" in their reviews.

True but you gotta love the legendary John Davis and the iconic blue blazer!

Tesla's a premium brand in the same segment crossshopped with the luxury brands.

The G70 will be "another pretty strong option" in its segment. Sales will be strong upfront, but will plateau then taper off. Its primary strength (on paper) will be price, but with strong incentives from the premium brands, that might not be a realistic advantage.

It will be a long uphill battle for them. Just look at how lexus is struggling to maintain it sales numbers against the germans; and that is with Lexus's superior customer experience and the best quality/reliability in the industry. It will take years for them to build a quality reputation to equal Lexus, and their current dealer experience is bottom of the barrel

It is not "loosely" based on a Stinger. It is a Stinger with a different body. I think the Stinger is more attractive than the terribly generic G70.

Right. It is a few inches shorter with a 2.5 in shorter wheelbase. Same drivetrains, suspension. As for price, I looked at the Stinger GT last year, but with the V6 and well optioned it was right up against the German prices. I expect this to be slightly higher.
When Lexus entered the market they were a bargain compared to the Germans.
Cadillac made this mistake when it launched the current CTS. Their reasoning was it is just as good as the E-Class so we will price it accordingly. I think we all know the results.

The Stinger can easily be had below list. I'm very pleased with my loaner--a fully optioned GT. The asking price of the Stinger and G70 are about $5K higher than they should be.So ask for $5K off and they will say yes.

A friend just finished his lease on a 340i. I recommended the new G70 considering all the great reviews it's getting. He was very interested but there were literally no cars in Southern California for him to test drive. NONE. The nearest G70 was in Las Vegas. He ended up leasing another BMW. I don't understand what Genesis is doing.

Good to hear from someone who lives with the Stinger. It is more original looking than the G70 and has more room.
Plus the Genesis dealer that just opened in my area is out in the sticks. We have a street of just car dealers nearby and a test track behind them. There are still a few empty from the great recession, but they opened 8 miles away. Plus, the only car they available to test drive is the G90.

That's because Genesis turned off the tap to clear out inventory so that when they turned it back on there would be less need for discounting.

Genesis has a lot of potential, but they will have to up their game considerably to be able to compete. They're a B player like Acura.

Indeed. The marketing has been MORONIC, seconded ONLY by poor product vision.

Speaking of vision, could we have names?

Instead of the Telluride or Palisade there should have been a Genesis.

BY NOW there should have been a Genesis "Model S".

Those two products would put it on the map.
