SPIED: Mercedes-Benz Turns Its Two Barrels To Other Large Luxury Sedans, SEE These All-new Spy Shots Of The Next-gen S-Class
Seeking a large luxury sedan and you only desire the best? If that's the case, it's pretty difficult to get past the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

While the current-gen S just received a refresh, all-new spy shots clearly show that the three-pointed star is working on an all-new replacement.

At this point it's still pretty early going, which means the vehicle is in its mule stage. The overall shape remains largely the same, however, its rear doors look distinctly longer and the rear windscreen appears to have a greater rake than before. I'd wager Mercedes is going to make sure this all-new body is more slippery through the air to help its fuel efficiency along.

Covered head-to-toe in camouflage and equipped with body armor, it's exceedingly difficult to see what's what. But, stay tuned to AutoSpies.com as we keep close tabs on the latest S-Class developments.

Prototypes of the new Mercedes S-Class saloon, which is set to launch in 2020, have been pictured undergoing development testing by our spy photographers in the Arctic Circle.

Despite Mercedes’ current S-Class saloon receiving a hefty facelift last year, these spy shots confirm that a full replacement is on the horizon and will bring a completely new look and advanced tech to the luxury segment. A new S-class coupe will also appear faced with fresh opposition in the shape of the BMW 8 Series...

Always an imposing looking car on the road. When you arrive in an S Class you have arrived.

And when you sit in an S-Class, you feel like it's an occasion. Can't say that about almost any other car in its class or price range.

Hard to believe its time for a new model already. Seems just like yesterday when the current, landmark, version was released in 2014.

Probably because the current-gen is crushing the competition, right?

I wish Mercedes would ditch the saggy diaper look with the arced lower character line on the DLO. Those two features make their sedans look like they got hit from behind and they bowed in the middle. This looks like it will be a "meet the new car...same as the old car" kind of moment.

If they designed it that way, it would look generic, like the new Audi A8.

Don't be ridiculous. The choice is not between looking like an anal suppository or an Audi Delta 88. This 450SEL 6.9 stance.

Totally agree. The droopy-ass look that MB has been carrying through all their models should be totally rethought for the new S-Class.

Not a fan of the current gen car. Interior is likely a wannabe Bentley or Rolls. Back in the day they had Teutonic Germanic interiors where everything had a purpose and a quite presence. There was no fluff. No pillow headrests, no quilting on the doors or for heaven's sake the dashboard or silly mood lighting. I could also live without the acres of glass on the dash. I would much prefer an array of gauges behind the wheel and disappearing info screen.

There's a reason the S-Class dominates its class. And a reason why everyone else is trying to catch up. There are certainly choices for you if you want a relatively no-nonsense big luxo car, I.e, G90, CT6, 7 Series, and even the A8 has gone sterile. There's also a reason why they don't sell nearly what the Benz sells.

Or you can do something completely different get a Tesla Model S in a configuration you like with its stark but nice to touch high quality interior. I think this model is now outselling the S-Class nearly 2:1 in the USA! There is a nice red one 2 streets over from me. The rest in my area are black, sliver and white (dull).

Sorry CC - But the TEsla is not in the same class as the Mercedes -
YOu may as well say that the now almost discontinued Chevy Cruze outsells the Mercedes too - Entry Level stuff does that.

I note that the Agents have failed to Leave open an ITEM that would allow us to pass our season's greetings on to the rest of the Community again. Unfortunately - My boss had a stroke yesterday morning - leaving me in charge - so I have little time to thank all who post here for the sometimes funny, sometimes contentious, but never bland discussions on real cars intermixed between the tesla Ads. I hope that all is well with you and yours and my best to all for a great Holiday Season. Happy New Year as well.

Thom

@CC Have you ever noticed that when people say "sorry" or "no offense" before they begin that (1) they are not sorry and (2) are hellbent on offending?

On another note: @TomM Sorry, no offense but no one--I repeat--no one wants to hear pithy "At this time of the year when yadda yadda yadda cliche cliche cliche."

@MD Indeed. It keeps life interesting. As does anyone who thinks people don't cross shop a Model S with the S-Class, 7, A8, XJ, Panamera etc... New wealth, new attitudes, new luxury, new sales. Merry Christmas to all....

People cross shop on PRICE and NOT on perceived tiers.

People often say they are sorry when they think you are wrong - more often with YOU matt - than with others here in this group. And more often with the Tesla people than all others too.

People Do not shop on Price Matt =- that is nonsense. Why is it that they don't ALL buy the cheapest car then? WHy buy a Lincoln when a Fiesta will get you there too. And of course - the Lincoln is based on the Mondeo chassis =- get a Fusion then. There are indeed levels in the business - a person like you would clearly know that one

They shop on what they perceive a car is worth - a $100,000 Toyota is still a Toyota and will never have the prestige of a true premium car. Lexus has had decades and still falls short of the top tier. Toyota will always be thought of as Entry level. That is why Genesis cannot sell in the same price range as a Mercedes - people do no perceive it to be worth the money

The S class has earned its place in the market over decades of development and leadership in many areas. IT will be decades more before the Tesla could reach that level. And Tesla has not supported it even as a luxury Second Tier - they are trying to sell it as a performance appliance you do not even have to drive.

The folks buying a Tesla Model S are looking for the hip cool factor. If you want true luxury in this price class, you get the S Class.

However you'd better be ok with the depreciation because the S Class depreciates horribly. Even the AMG versions don't hold their value particularly well.

The S Class is the old school luxury leader, the Model S is more of a premium car technically in the same size and price segment. Much like the iPhone is a premium product, not a luxury one (you can get diamond encrusted phones with concierge services, that's old school luxury). S Class is more comfortable, Model S has much better performance, cool tech that gets better over time (Christmas update was awesome... love the Pole Position game that uses the actual steering wheel for controls), and much better practicality/cost of ownership/resale value.

Possibly some people are cross shopping the E Class or A7, but MD is right that price is the determinant. Plus the AMG version aggressively burns fuel, so not appealing to Muskateers.

The difference between TomM and me when it comes to the habits of buyers is that his flabby old farty ass says utter stupidity that his dementia tells him is truth while I pay a lot of attention to demographic research that brands are constantly providing to sellers of their cars.
