RUMOR: Would You Give A Green Light To An All-new Toyota Supra CONVERTIBLE?

...Given the fifth-generation Toyota Supra is based on the same platform as the new BMW Z4 roadster and shares many of its components – including its potent 250kW six-cylinder engine – Tada said the company is naturally considering its options...

...During a whistle-stop tour in Australia, as part of the last leg of the
Toyota Supra's chassis tuning program, Tada-san told carsales.com.au that a convertible derivative of the all-new two-seat sports coupe was very much on Toyota’s radar

"Of course we consider this," said Tada-san...

So a niche version of an overpriced niche product? What could go wrong?

I am sure the BMW Z5 convertible roof will work on it just fine being that it is a BMW product and not a Toyota.

Sure - why not just directly compete with the BMW and stray farther from the original Supra vision. Nahhh, it won't diminish the brand equity of the Supra.

Tuners love convertibles (no one said ever).

Toyota is going to have a HARD time selling the coupe version past the 1st or 2nd years...The used car market will probably be strong for these cars, after the initial depreciation sets in and it goes below the price of a new or used M2. Don't believe me, see MUSTANG GT, BMW, AUDI...Look at used car prices...35-45% depreciation 2-3 years on... Let's face it, present economy, 50k-65k is a big nut to pay every month, you can stretch out the payments as long as you want, pretty soon, anything more than 600 to 650 bucks is rough in this world of falling wages.

The new Supra is a $35K car with a $70K price tag.

MD - absolutely! Supra should have been all-Toyota with a super-turbo'd 4 cylinder and AWD - it should have been the step up car for all those folks who had Subaru WRX STI's.

Supra is going to be a dud

It should have been:

Celica 2.0T / $25K / drop GT86
Supra V6 / $30K
Supra GT V8 / $35K

Forget AWD because (1) it isn't necessary and (2) AWD cars are often rather numb feeling compared to RWD

While if I had to choose (on styling alone) I would prefer the Supra convertible looks to the Z4 looks. However this is likely never going to happen as deal was BMW builds a convertible and Supra builds a coupe, likely forever on this platform but certainly for an exclusive period. I believe these are built in a BMW factory so would not Toyoda need BMW to agree to a competing convertible.

They will be built in Austria in the independent factory of Magna Steyr.
