SPIED: GM Says They Won’t Show The New Corvette Until June. Merry Christmas! Here It Is NOW!
Well, sort of.

Easily one of the most anticipated sports cars in the past couple of years, General Motors' performance division has every automotive enthusiast on the edge of their seat. Why? That's because the Chevrolet Corvette is poised for the biggest change of its existence.

That's because, for the first time, it's expected to switch to a mid-engine layout. In the world of 'Vettephiles, this is a paradigm shift.

Having said that, there's been a lot of spy shots of the vehicle. But, the one you'll see now is easily the best one yet. The camouflage is starting to fall off as is the heavy cladding.

For the first time you can really see the greenhouse, front valence and get a better idea of how the venting into the engine bay will look.

Enjoy this early Christmas gift, Spies!

There’s been another sighting of Corvette’s mysterious supercar, and this time it's cropped up on the road in Port Huron, Michigan. The new pictures were posted by Ryan Hurren on Instagram, and although the car’s covered in camo again, we get another look at its mid-engined proportions.

To our eyes, the new C8 or ‘Zora’ as it’s rumoured to be called looks a little like a Ferrari 458 with a smidge of Honda NSX, combined with the same angular lines of the current Corvette...

I feel like when this finally does get revealed it’s going to be a big fat “so what”.

Maybe so. While the looks and engine placement will not please everyone the power and handling should be dynamic and welcomed. Chevy made quantum leaps in ride, handling and refinement with the C7 and the C8 with its new engine placement should move greatly beyond. Hopefully.

@cidflekken I'm thinking Chevy Fiero.

@pubproud Quantify "greatly beyond" because the current Corvette Z06 easily matches the Ferrari 458 at the ring and the ZR1 obliterates them both.

Everything I've read points to four engine options for new C8 being rolled out over time ... 6.2 liter naturally aspirated engine same as base C7 with a slight power uptick, followed by supercharged 6.2 liter version as in Z06 but with still more power, then a new dual overhead engine with significantly more power (think 8,500+rpm and 750+hp), and lastly a twin turbo dual overhead cam version with 900+ horse power. If true this is what "greatly beyond" in terms of Corvette evolution looks to be, taking on some of the best Europe has to offer at lower prices (a usual Corvette trait).

It all depends on how much time and effort that the team puts into setup of the car. The first C7 Z06 was not a good track car and was reported as always being far too lose and twitchy. If they really work hard, it has a chance at being as good as the C7 is now, if not a bit better. I hope they find buyers. It's a car, but it is not a Corvette.

Indeed. Our Corvette orders have gone up by people wanting to get a Corvette before the fake one shows up. A mid-engined Corvette is as antithetical to Corvette fans as would be a front-engined 911.

@MD- Can you get a Corvette as a loner to drive as your daily?

Who (i.e. which paying customers) ever asked for a mid-engine Corvette? No one is my guess. This has been a dream of Chevy engineers ever since the Fiero was launched.

If Chevy is smart - the existing Corvette will continue in production alongside of a mid-engine one and the mid-engine one will be called the 'Corvette Stradale' or something like that.

Chevy just might ruin the Corvette brand because it is likely that customers will not care, unless the mid-engine one gets cheaper (and how likely is that?).

Plans seem to be to sell both C7 and C8 for a time to see how market shakes out. The C8 was rumored to be called the Zora but now word is it will be the Manta Ray.

The dream actually goes back to the late 1960's with the CERV prototype using a two rotor rotary engine. It was out on the test track at the Tech Center. Better looking than this one. Zora Duntov, Vette Chief Engineer and race driver was the motivation. Calling it the Zora isn't a bad idea if one is into Corvette lore.

If you are going to shoot a duck, aim where the duck is heading, not where it is now. The market is changing. Chevy has said they have wrung all the performance they can from the current set up. It is likely the C7 will be sold alongside the C8 fro a long time.
Henry Ford once famously said that if he asked customers what they wanted they would have answered, a faster horse.

So, by that stupid logic the 911 should go mid-engined?

No Matt but every great Porsche race car at the highest level has been mid-engined (in chronological order the 550,718,904,906,908,917,936,956/962,911 GT1,RS Spyder,919) and the only thing holding the Cayman back is fear it steps on 911 performance.

The Cayman is a good example. The Cayman is a better layout, however Porsche did not want to lose the 911 purist and their unique product, so they now have two sports.
I believe the front engine Corvette will be with us for some time as Corvette becomes a brand within a brand.

If they turn the corvette brand into a stand alone product I think we will see the manta ray (mid engine) along side a front engine corvette. Would you have thought ten years ago that there would ever be a 120k corvette? The zr1 was a precursor into the scalability of the brand. I don't believe GM will disappoint, growing up in Detroit many of my friends are now working in good positions in GM and the design/engineering arm of the company, new talent coming in over the past 5 years. Hopefully many new and exciting products to come.

GM has always had engineering and design talent and the potential to build great cars (Holden V8 sedans, the current C8 Corvette). It has been senior management poor decisions that have derailed the organization.

The conspiracy theorists insist it is really a Cadillac, part of a last ditch effort to introduce Cadillac to younger buyers and save the brand.

At this point, Cadillac is so adrift that a Cadillac Fiero would die as quickly as the XLR died.
