Veloster N VS Civic Type R - Did Hyundai Learn Anything From Those German Engineers It Has Been Snatching Up?

Hyundai’s high-performance lineup has finally arrived in America thanks to the launch of the 2019 Veloster N.

Designed to compete with hot hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the model starts at $27,785 and features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 250 hp (186 kW / 253 PS) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque. Early reviews of the model have been pretty positive, but how does it stack up against the Honda Civic Type R?

The Veloster N is priced like the Civic should be. The price of the Civic is Mustang GT money and the Mustang will obliterate the ugly origami thing from Honda.

In almost every aspect, the Type R is a level above the Veloster N. Strong effort by Hyundai, but somewhat let down considering the engineering prowess involved.

For $8K more the Civic should be better but it's not $8K better.

That might be true. But maybe Hyundai intentionally set that price point to gain interest with intention to increase price with increased demand.

And there is still an $8K price difference without an $8K reason for the Civic. Hyundai could have priced the Veloster the way they did because someone in the meeting had bad gas but it doesn't change the fact the $8k is $8K.

And that is based on what empirically?

Have not driven the Veloster N but the Civic Type R is a fantastic car for the money...not liking the looks but the driving experience is far above its pay grade.

I've driven it and the GTI would be better if the GTI had adequate power.
