Apple On Wheels? Detroit News Names Model 3 As 2018 Car Of The Year

It appears that Elon Musk was right to bet the future of Tesla on the Model 3. Since the electric car started getting delivered to its long list of reservation holders, the vehicle has won the hearts of EV enthusiasts and old-school gearheads alike. A member of the latter group is Henry Payne of The Detroit News, who previously noted in an appearance at Autoline TV that he purchased a Long Range RWD Model 3 simply because there is no other vehicle like it on the road.

Payne is a true-blooded car enthusiast. Apart from being a 30-year veteran of the news industry, Payne is also an avid racecar driver and a professional automotive critic. He is also the farthest from being a stereotypical EV buyer, openly admitting that he’s not a “greenie” and that he is not a global warming believer. That said, if there is one thing that Payne knows, it is cars — how they work, and how good they are.

It's not reliable enough to be an Apple.

Odd thing about Apple even the newest phones offer the same screen resolution as the phones they were selling was the iPhone 4 just 326ppi. How sad is that? Especially when a new XL phone costs as much as a mortgage payment. You will find much higher resolutions in phones from Samsung, Google, Huawei etc...

Payne displays mucho ignorance about the EV world. Tesla sales are getting clobbered by the first direct competitors to hit the market - the Jaguar I Pace : garnering 17 awards and getting extremely positive reviews and outselling Tesla Model S and X in Holland and elsewhere - often two to one, while Tesla sales dropped an astonishing 40% in Norway, largely due to the introduction of the I Pace. . Now we hear that Porsche, which a few months ago announced that intense demand had forced them to double their yearly production of their upcoming electric Taycan, just yesterday announced that the entire first year's production of roughly 50,000 vehicles had been completely sold out, and that a large portion of the buyers were Tesla owners. That sales number exceeds the expected number of sales for either the Model S or Model X. And there are still more on the waiting list for the following year. There is NO waiting list for either the Model S or Model X, for any year. The Model 3 is the next target in the sights of the first of more than 250 electric cars being developed for introduction over the next several years, 20 from VW group and 22 from General Motors, with VW introducing a very highly rated ID SUV and later a $23,000 EV.
Tesla is looking at a very bleak future.

Yet S/X sales are at an all time high and Q4 will almost certainly be Tesla's best quarter everywhere. The EV market is expanding faster than the number of competitors, there's enough room for everyone. That's a good thing.

The VW ID SUV is a blatant copy of the Aston Martin DBX. Too funny... In a US market of 17M units, there is indeed enough BEV market demand for everyone.

"Tesla is looking at a very bleak future." - Tesla sold more Model 3 than all cars sold by BMW or Mercedes or Audi or Lexus in the last quarter in America. Every car company would love to have this kind of terrible future.

Payne needs to find another line of work and be quiet at the same time
