Making Mexico Great Again? GM Becomes Country's Number One Exporter

General Motors may be winding down some of its plants in the United States and Canada, but its Mexican operations are thriving.

So much so, that GM is on track to end 2018 as the largest producer and exporter of automobiles in Mexico, according to a report from GM Authority. It will be for the first time in recent history that the U.S. automaker has risen to that position.

A lot of that success comes from GM’s reorganization of its Mexican plants to produce crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. Since those vehicles happen to be the most popular right now, as opposed to slower-selling sedans, growth has come naturally.

GM is adrift in mismanagement and this is more proof.

While I think GM is long term doomed, perhaps this is a move to end the UAW. I want GM vehicles made here but labor is the #1 or 2 cost and in a global market their days are numbered as lower cost regions or automation will force companies to do whatever they have to do in order to lower their costs.

Still Mary Barra as is becoming more relevant has been a disaster. GM has nearly all their cookies in One basket competing largely and only China and the US. To continue as a global company there’s no question I see them merging with someone which could turn out to be the best move they make .

I can really see a merger or takeover happening and soon.

I wonder why Germany, Japan etc... can afford to pay their auto workers so well. Personally I think the whole union/management relationship should change in the US car industry. I want to see well paid workers who take pride in their work and have $ to spend in the economy.

The UAW is well paid. If you want to improve the lot of the workers, ban the UAW--and all unions--for all political action. Making every state a right-to-work state where workers can leave the union would be a godsend. How about making union dues 1/500th of a worker's salary?

I am all for banning any entity except a US citizen from any political activities/contributions including unions, corporations, PACs etc... only individuals should be able to contribute. If I were King I would also limit the total political contributions to some reasonable amount like $2000 per year so that most people can participate and have an equal voice/speech.

Agreed that’s said MB was handed a company with zero debt and flush with cash… It’s largely been wasted.

MB has done ZERO product development that raises the bar. Instead we get "OK for now" designs and dull-to-ugly styling.

Labor is only 10 percent or less of a typical car's cost. Raw material cost increases due to tRump's ill advised and reckless tariffs hurts more.
GM's overhead - too many executives making too much money - is a killer.

I think with VW, labor is 90% of the cost. LOL

It was GM management that green lighted the Aztec, the CT6 with a 4 cyl and bland interior, that bought Saab (Saab!), created new brands such as Saturn and Hummer when they already had too many brands.

GM has always had moronic management.

I think the Ford/VW "collaboration" will be extremely good for Lincoln.

It's all just part of the Divine Master Plan to get Mexico to pay for The Wall. Just wait to see how the Master Deal Maker reveals his wisdom to us, his humble servant, in due time.

Agree that Lincoln could benefit from VW tie-up. Lincoln has quietly moved into relevance in the luxury. Cadillac repeatedly announces they are going to move to top tier luxury and then keeps changing strategy. Sad that their best selling vehicles are rebadged crossovers and large SUV. None have "best in class" credentials.

Cadillac sells two versions of the Equinox and soon a version of the Traverse. I find that very very sad.

We waited years for the first vehicle developed under de Nysschen and all we got was the XT4?!? They could have pushed this out in months. Now what is the plan?
I am not impressed with the Escala for two reasons; it looks like an Audi and it will never be built.
