BMW Planning A New Super Car To Take On Ferrari And Lamborghini?

BMW appears to be interested in launching a proper supercar, which will take on rivals such as the Porsche 911 Turbo, McLaren 570S and more.

Believed to serve as an indirect replacement for the current i8, Autocar reports that the yet-unnamed Bavarian supercar could sit at the high end of the Munich-based car firm’s M division.

The new BMW supercar is believed to arrive by 2023, when Ferrari, Lamborghini and other exotic carmakers will already have launched their new electrified models, featuring a really powerful hybrid powertrain.

Better question: why?

With BMW so missing the mark with one car after another, they should NOT be focusing on a niche car. They should be figuring out how totally new cars get approved for production looking 20 years old.

Exactly, WHY?

Haven't they tried this super car thing a few times? Not sure it has worked out for them that well. Maybe tie up with whatever is left of De Tamaso or Lotus or someone in that vein if they really want to go that route.

In the auto business you run with the pack or you get left behind. BMW is playing catch up. If they screw this up they slip further back.

Good on them! I like the front end in that pic too, nice evolution of the current design

Reflect on how the 8 Series was dumbed down for production or how the Z4 was dumbed down for production or how the 7 Series was dumbed down for production and there suddenly is no cause for joy.

If BMW must make a supercar -make a modern day M1 but make it good looking and retroish to pay homage to the original lines which still looks damn fine parked in the wrong garage (not mine)!

It's Porsche that BMW should go after

BMW certainly has the engineering prowess to go after Porsche. As disappointing as the styling is on the new Z4 compared to the show car in driving capability it is very close to a Porsche Boxster/Cayman in handling and has a much nicer engine.
