Porsche Says Number 1 Conquested Brand For New Taycan Is Tesla

Porsche is set to begin the initial production of the Taycan, its first all-electric car, sometime this year. While the company is yet to reveal the production version of the vehicle, Porsche has nonetheless stated that the reception to the upcoming EV has been very positive so far.

Last month, Porsche North America President and CEO Klaus Zellmer noted in a statement to CNET that pre-orders for the Taycan have been “pretty amazing.” Zellmer did not reveal an exact number, though he did tease that “If all the people [who preordered] buy this car, then we are sold out for the first year.” This is quite impressive, considering that Porsche originally intended to produce 20,000 units of the Taycan annually.

@zlives - Exactly! They never feature a shot of the REAL car. It is sadly going to be a design dud like the Panamera. They should have just built the Mission E.

Here is what it will really look like: https://insideevs.com/porsche-taycan-range-drive-24-hours/

It will not look as cool as the concept above. A Panamera with a slightly different front end is closer to the truth. Too bad.

It will still be a wonderful vehicle.

Agree. But being pretty should not be too much to ask for at these prices. Having a Humpback is uncalled for.

I suspect that Porsche ran into aero problems with the Mission E. It was certainly a winner.

Out of my 10 friends who own/owned Tesla's, 7 of them were one-time lessees and all of those 7 went to Porsche after their Tesla lease was up - 3 Cayennes, 2 Panameras, and 2 Macans.

Hey SanJoseDriver, can you call down to the "Tesla Sales Department" and ask them what the "repeat customer" rate is on Tesla products? I'd guess out of every 10 Tesla new customers, only 2 or 3 get another one. It would be good to know the real data though. Can you get it for us, SJD?

Another way to look at this besides a loss for Tesla is a loss for traditional luxury makers. Porsche is the newest on the scene with SUVs and sedan offerings. If a % of Tesla replacement sales go to other makers, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Lexus etc may still be on the losing end.

@Jazzyjazz so they went from a $15K vehicle to a $60K vehicle?

If I worked for Telsa I would let you know, but of all the people I know that bought a Tesla I only know one that went back to another brand (Mercedes S550, and he's in his late 60's). Know three people on their second Tesla, not including myself. Based on their customer satisfaction score, I would guess around 90% of owners buy Tesla again. Everyone that I know that has one today at minimum says they will never go back to an ICE car.

The question is first how long Elon will remain at Tesla and next when will Tesla be bought out by another auto maker?

Stock market not pleased with Tesla for sales falling short and with price reduction, while making price more competitive reduces margins significantly.

I would not have lowered prices. Anyone shelling out for an Model 3, X or S has lots of income. Stay the course. Everyone will hit the 200k mark in unit sale soon enough.

You only cut prices when you know sales are not robust. To here the Teslarati here talk, Tesla is having a 100% increase in volume every second of the day. There should be no bribe or tax incentive to buy an EV in the first place.

I know lots of people stretching their budgets for the Model 3. Heck, I could barely afford the Model S which is how I ended up with the rare "40" model.

Not surprised. The first batch of Model S owners are tired now without any major updates on the Model S. Model 3 is a downgrade, so naturally Taycan.

i did, did you? the saving grace for Tesla (according to the article) is that there will be more model-3 produced than Taycan?!!! who do they think is cross shopping the model-3 with a taycan?
i don;t know what the number of registrtions for model-s was in 2018 but if you subtract 10k off that as Porsche conquests...

@PUGPROUD - Fair and unfair comment. Porsche is using a VAG platform and tech. Not quite the same as developing and paying for your own. I am sure they will benefit from the technology sharing and post good group EBITA regardless.

Not sure of the point that Porsche is not developing and paying for their own platform and tech. Porsche is part of VAG. Makes perfect sense given Porsche's price point. The technology will spread to other brands under VAG. Big advantage for large manufacturers.

@Truthy The way I would look at it as Porsche is leading the R+D effort for an electric sedan/suv platform, but the costs of that R+D will be shared and paid for by the VAG group. Porsche would not be stuck with the entire bill and have Bentley, Lambo, Audi etc use the plans at no cost. Porsche therefore would only be stuck paying for their share of the development.
