SPIED + DETAILS: Next-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class + EQ S Plan To Retain The Large Luxury Sedan Class Crown

Mercedes-Benz has gone back to the drawing board with the S-Class in a bid to provide the upcoming seventh-generation model with a range of electrified powertrains, driver assistance features, technology and outright comfort to lift it beyond rivals such as the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series.

The new Mercedes flagship, which is due in UK showrooms next year, has been developed to support two distinctly different saloon models for the first time. While standard versions are set to receive a range of plug-in hybrid drivetrains, the German car maker also plans to introduce an aerodynamically optimised pure-electric version that insiders say will serve as the flagship model for its new EQ electric vehicle sub-brand.

Badged EQ S, the new model will offer a claimed range in excess of 310 miles on the latest WLTP test cycle when it goes on sale in 2022...

The next S Class with all the tech and luxury one would expect and a 300+ mile range on pure electric should sell insanely well.

Once again, the S Class will obliterate the BMW LS and the Audi Delta 88.

In the S-Class range (not RR nor Bentley)...
1. S-Class
2. LS
3. 7er
4. G90/A8
5. XJ

The current gen S class has simply solidified the S Class in a class of its own, I don’t care what car you drive after driving it, every other luxury sedan seems to be missing something or doesn’t feel quite as special. Even Rolls/Bentley deliver until you user their infotainment system and feel like you are in a BMW or Audi all over again

There is no question Mercedes “wants” this crown as they simply deliver on this fantastic product with every new generation. IT is the Mercedes that makes the greatest statement and they will likely never allow it to stumble. A philosophy and product every manufacturer should emulate and if so what amazing cars we’d all drive vs all the beige out there...

I guess part of the problem is, where do the other brands go without copying Benz? BMW has tried sporty. Fail. Audi has tried sporty with tech. Fail. Lexus has tried flashy and efficient. Fail. Genesis and Cadillac tried the value approach. Big fails. It’s nigh impossible to out-luxury the S, so what other angle can anyone take?

BMW had their chance, in 2014, with the Vision Future Luxury concept. The 7-series looked nothing like it and now they are trying to correct that with the 2019 "facelift." I think BMW "dumb downed" the 7-series because of the upcoming 8-Series Gran Coupe.

The Future Luxury Concept was gorgeous and it looked pretty production feasible. Not producing it was foolish. The same is true of the 8 Series concept that was magnificent and then we got something that looked like a bad Chinese clone of a Mustang. The Z4 concept.went from fantastic to Miata dull on introduction. The question for BMW is not can they style a gorgeous car because obviously they can, but why can't they BUILD THEM?

The S Class continues being class itself but in a shrinking market segment. In NYC area the GLS is replacing the family sedan as the vehicle of choice of the well to do.

Is it me or does this new S-Class look like a refresh of the old one? Same blobby shape, carrying on the same styling language.

I've not been a fan of the old shape but I'm sure this will sell well once its launched

Too early to tell.

My guess is it will be an evolution on an all-new chassis.

As of now it's quite early so it may be leveraging the existing body hacked together for R&D purposes.
