Audi Plans To Go Toe To Toe Against Tesla Model Y Crossover

Audi is planning to unveil a small all-electric SUV at the Geneva auto show in March. The vehicle is expected to compete with Tesla Model Y, which is also expected to be unveiled around the same time.

At the debut of the Audi e-tron in the Netherlands yesterday, Andreas Mindt, Head Exterior Design at Audi, said that the company plans to unveil a “smaller e-tron SUV”, a car that is described as a compact electric SUV, according to AutoWeek Netherlands, who were present at the event.

This might be the size I'm most interested in. If the Model Y is based off of the 3, then it might have the same lack of dash. Sorry, I'm too old school and can't accept only a tablet in the middle of the dash serving as the entire control center of the car. A heads up display might have made it tolerable. But there's too many controls (in my opinion) that need hard knobs/buttons, and the Model 3 is lacking far too many of them.

The Model 3 is a "set and forget" kind of a device. Once you start driving, the only "knobs" you need are the 2 thumb wheels on the steering wheel. The left one controls volume and radio station or music channel, the right wheels control the cruise speed and following distances if the car has Autopilot.

Everything else is similar to traditional vehicle with the center display, except on a larger screen and higher resolution. Most of these functions you don't need to fiddle with while driving to begin with. Navigation using the screen is very easy since the screen is far more responsive. Or you can always use voice to control functions such as navigation or calling.

As I keep saying, one needs to have a drive on the Model 3 to truly appreciate what it does and find out how easy it is to get used to. Keep listening to all the naysayers will only kill off your brain cells.

I'm no fan of Audi. In fact, I am a detractor. BUT Audi EVs will be better engineered with better quality than the crap from the tent in Fremont.

"will be"....we've been hearing this crap for almost 4 years now. Billions of dollars and a century old company still can't get a competitive EV on the market.

Yeah, why would they want to stop the bleeding from sales going to Tesla?

So Tesla now is getting pressure on it model 3 from the lower end. Nissan Leaf, Kia Niro, Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Kona and soon the VW ID Buzz. MY prediction do not expect sales of an actual 35K model 3. Average transaction price is more likely to be 50K. Tesla cannot make any money on a 35K model 3. And money is one thing Tesla does not have a lot of.So now Audi is starting to challenge the higher end. It will soon b followed by Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes as well as Volvo. Tesla will soon be assaulted by competition where previously it had the market all to itself. In a few years it wil either be bye bye Tesla or the Tesla EV division of a larger auto company.

It's very easy to sell a lot of cars when you don't have any competition. It becomes much harder when there is a lot of competition and in 2019 there most certainly will be. Will Tesla be able to continue its rapid sales growth once Audi, Jaguar, Nissan, BMW, Porsche etc. launch their own EVs I would bet no.
