Ford Goes On The Offensive And Will Answer EV Threat With An All Electric F-150
Ford has repeatedly talked about its upcoming F-150 Hybrid, but the automaker used yesterday’s Deutsche Bank Global Automotive Conference to confirm plans for an electric variant.

According to The Detroit News, Ford’s president of global markets used the conference to reveal “We’re going to be electrifying the F-Series – battery electric and hybrid.” Jim Farley declined to elaborate, but said the move was designed to “futureproof” the company’s range of popular pickups.

The news of a battery electric pickup was unexpected and Fox News reached out to Ford’s North American product communications manager, Mike Levine, who confirmed Farley was indeed talking about “an all-electric F-150.”

I wonder just how much an all electric F150 will weigh? It will take a lot of batteries to drive this drive, let alone have a tow rating or bed rating that is close to the ICE equivalent.

It will need a ton of batteries, but should be able to blow away any ICE variant in towing and power. Also electric motors just weigh about 100 lbs each. They can make it a true 4x4 with a lot less weight than an ICE motor. Net weight should still be 1,000 lbs more or so with a 120 kWh pack.

For a few miles and then it will become a paper weight.

The motors weigh much less with higher power output, torque, and longevity. The motors + battery are still heavier than an ICE powertrain, but not for long. An electric F150 shouldn't be more than 500-1,000 lbs heavier.

It will be interesting to see if Ford will do a truly clean sheet F150-EV to sell next to the F150-ICE. That would be the logical move. Given the tie up with VW and VWAG's complete lack of an Expedition/Escalade/Navigator type of entrant into the market, a dedicated F150-EV platform could produce a large Audi SUV for the many monied people that pull trailers.
