SPIED! New Chevy Blazer Out In Dealers BEFORE The Press Launch. WHY? Is GM SCARED Of The Media Reaction?

SPIED! New Chevy Blazer Out In Dealers BEFORE The Press Launch. WHY? Is GM SCARED Of The Media Reaction?
During my trip to the last winter 2019 Detroit Auto Show #NAIAS2019, our friends at Ford were kind enough to loan me a 2019 Raptor during my stay. So when someone hands you the keys to a Raptor, YOU GET OUT AND DRIVE!

IT was fun to explore outside of the city for the first time at my pace but I noticed something different on my Sunday drive. I spied the all new 2019 Chevy Blazer not wearing MFG plates, but normal consumer tags. It was weird to see because there had been no media launch drive. It was wearing this miserable 'Sunlit Bronze Metallic' color. If I were have had to name it after seeing it in person it probably would have been 'Sunlit Bronze Turdtallic'. Trust us, in person it DOES NOT get better.

Without getting into too much inside baseball, the auto companies normally have a number of press drives BEFORE the vehicle hits the showroom floors. The goal is to have all the reviews and video up THEN to dealer sales floors. But this time that didn't happen.

Stay with us and keep reading, because this gets even weirder.

I called 00R (in a hospital bed right now in NJ with pneumonia so send him some love in the comments) and said is the Blazer already out and he said yup, all over dealers here in NJ. I say man that's strange there was no press drive.

So I forget about it until this weekend where i find out there IS a press launch right here in good old San Diego as we speak but are you ready for this??? Wait for it...The media attending is under EMBARGO until Feb 4th and cannot post anything. SO, the vehicle has been in dealers for close to a month. People have been BUYING them and you or I can go to a local dealer to photograph the cars there and post anything we want. But the media has to keep their mouths shut until next month?

Tell us, WHAT are we missing here? What mental giant made that call?

So we ask, is it just an error, or did they do it on PURPOSE because they were afraid of underwhelming media reaction that might slow sales out of the gate?

Spies, discuss...

Getting it into the hands of customers is much more important than caring about the hurt feeling of the press who have not gotten a junket of babes and alcohol.

That said, this is a size sample of ONE.

Who is the owner?

By way of comparison...

A handful of Giulias were "sold" to "private citizens" quite a while before stock began to trickle into the dealers.

Things like this happen.

GM thinks it will sell with or without the press putting their spin on it. They've taken no risks so far, why change that?

I did not get to drive one. My feelings are not hurt.

Is it going to drive any differently than the half dozen other crossovers badge engineered from the same platform?

Here's an idea: test the new Blazer against the XT6.

Is their new strategy just to randomly throw a bunch of darts and see if any of them stick? BTW that front underbody spoiler looks ridiculous too.

It is very odd and is a good question. At 50,000$, there has to be concern that the reviews will be mediocre. I sat in one at a dealer. Nice enough but not at anything close to 50 large. And with non defeatable start stop, it's well a non- starter at any price.

As long as i don't have to read it 's the Camaro of SUV's, i'll be fine. Unfortunately i suspect every reviewer will parrot this ridiculous line.

Toyota called, they want their ugly-ass grill back.

$50k for that??? No way. I'd take any number of other crossovers before this thing - Explorer, Pallisade, Telluride, Ascent, etc.

The RS version looks nice (was checking out dealers that are reviewing them on youtube) (tho i'd prefer a rugged version over this), and the 48k sticker is 15K more than it should be. And it isn't really much bigger than the Equinox, so whats the point?

Similarly, the Ford Edge makes no sense, but it sells pretty well.

I don't mind the color - at least it isn't black, white, or grey

I showed my dad the blazer in this post and suggested me should petition his dealer to stock up on this color because it's bound to be the hot-ticket color among the gents into water play in the Palm Springs area.

Make sure to tell the tester which is the Blazer and which is the XT6.
$50 K ?!?!

It is the rebirth of the same strategy GM used in the 70s and 80s of putting different front and rear facing to create 4 5 cars from one.
Sad.

This looks a lot like the Acura RDX. While not my choice for a new car, it has a much nicer interior, is better and can be had in A-Spec loaded for $46 K. Still too expensive, but highlights the challenge Chevy has.

With all the talk of self- driving vehicles, who is really being taken for a ride by General Motors ?
Against a backdrop of falling demand for sedans, and the announcement of consequent factory closures in the US, General Motors is bringing back the Chevrolet Blazer, nameplate, on a new Sport Utility Vehicle which logically would replace the lost sales in the sedan market, but the automaker's decision to build the SUV in Mexico was already not sitting well with the United Auto Workers Union.
Minutes after GM announced in 2018 that the Blazer would be making a comeback in the 2019 model year, the labor union issued a statement blasting the plan to build the new Blazer at the Ramos Arizpe factory in Mexico.
This news that the iconic Blazer nameplate will be built in Mexico is bound to be disappointing to UAW families and communities across this country.
GM employs over 15,000 production workers in Mexico, pays the workers less than $3 per hour and exports over 80 percent of the vehicles to the U.S. to sell here. This is all happening while UAW-GM workers here in the U.S being are laid off.
The timing of the announcement comes just days before the signing of the new USMCA agreement, and months after GM specifically warned the Trump administration that continued effects of the tariffs on imports from China, could lead to “a smaller GM with lower U.S. production and job losses at American manufacturing plants”.
The tariffs mainly affect imports of the Buick Envision SUV from GM’s factory in China.

The Buick envision sold 41 000 units in north America in 2017, 17 % of Buick’s US sales, and 200 000 units were also sold in China.
In 2018 GM saw to import 6 month supply of envisions. ahead of the first round of tariffs in July.
GM said the decision to build the Blazer in Mexico was made years ago and that the Blazer's engines are made in the U.S.
The new Blazer, due in showrooms early this year, is well timed as American buyers continue their shift from cars to trucks and SUVs. This year trucks and SUVs accounted for about two-thirds U.S. new-vehicle sales, with cars making up the rest.

Chevy hopes to take a chunk out of Jeep Grand Cherokee sales, one of the more popular and profitable vehicles in the Jeep lineup, in the growing midsize SUV segment. Last year Fiat Chrysler sold nearly 159,000 Grand Cherokees which are produced in Toledo Ohio.
So, whilst GM is blaming the shift in demand from cars to SUVs for the factory closures, they are also moving production of two SUVs with high potential production numbers to low cost manufacturing sites outside the US.
