DRIVEN + VIDEO: So, Does The All-new Bentley Continental GT RETAKE The Grand Touring Crown? We Find Out...
When the Bentley Continental GT made its mid 2000s debut, it was really something. Sure, it was a chassis based on the Volkswagen Phaeton, but who really cared?

The Phaeton was an engineering masterpiece.

For the long-awaited second-gen Continental GT, the old dog hasn't learned new tricks. Dipping back into the Volkswagen Auto Group's parts bin, it now leverages a lot of the Porsche Panamera. But how does that translate into a long-distance, grand tourer?

Leave it to Carfection's Heny Catchpole to find out.

Check out the video review, below, and let us know if your interest in the all-new Continental GT has INCREASED or DECREASED after hearing the good, the bad and the down low about the latest Bentley.

Henry Catchpole reviews the new Bentley Continental GT on the roads of Scotland. In a desperate attempt to justify the journey up Henry comes up with some totally non tenuous connection between that country and the car.

Amazing car. Probably the best interior in the biz.

Great car. Amazing stamping in the bodywork. Shocked to find out the grill materials are actually plastic on a car that costs as much as a house.

The rear and side profile of the car are great, unfortunately the don’t end let’s it down and the 4 headlight treatment will probably prematurely age it, hence why Benz retired it 2 generations ago on the S/CL coupe.

Interior is great, the fact that it’s based on a Porsche Panamara is a blessing and a curse, increased driving dynamics kind of sacrifice the tuetonic bank vault autobahn cruiser of the last one based on the Phaeton.

Overall, big improvement, though I’m not quite sure it’s enough to ward off increased competition from Aston/Benz and even more recent attempts by BMW 8 series/Lexus LC which all undercut the Bentley in price whine right now is struggling to make a profit

The styling is so played out it's ridiculous. The first Continental was on the market too long unchanged and it's replacement wears nearly indistinguishable styling. It will sell in the dozens worldwide.

@MD- I agree the old car was let way too long on the market. It had Beluga like styling and was too thick around the middle. To my eye the new CGT is 1000% better and is a very sleek and powerful car. The interior is untouchable by any other maker. 3.4 to 60 and 207 top speed, it is also no slouch. But in 2017 only 895 CGT units were sold in the USA. It is not for everyone.

To my eyes it's as thick and flabby looking as the old one. The old one was not a 100% beauty and this one has styling that goes entirely in the wrong direction.

I have liked the look from the start. (Although I am not sure I will ever get @carloslassiter's Marty Feldman crack out of my head when I look at the new iteration.) Nevertheless, it's difficult for me to get too worked up about a car I cannot afford without selling my wife and daughters.

The Marty Feldman front end is still not for me. Morgan tried the same wacko look - didn't work for them either.

The Bentley Continental GT is basically a 1996 Cadillac Eldorado or Lincoln Mark VIII reincarnated for 2019 at 5x the price. Plus its way too big.

#SILLY

You got it half right. It is silly, but the size isn't the culprit. It's a Bentley so it should be big and stately except that it's not stately. The styling is trying to make a big car look 30% smaller and it just doesn't work. Ironically, the Eldo and the Mark knew exactly what they were trying to be. The Bentley doesn't. It's trying to big yet small, lithe yet it's flabby, gorgeous yet it's hideous.

The Continental should have been reimagined into a more traditional, upright, formal coupe and should have ditched all the curvy wannabe styling.

For those who have forgotten, the car is really an homage to the 1952-1955 Continental Coupe. When you look at this this way, it looks exactly like it is supposed to look. Big, bold, low and with a very organic shaped body.

Ugly is still ugly but people who cannot afford expensive things always pretend they are in the know and that they have discerning taste...when they don't.
