REVIEW: STUD or DUD? BMW X4 M40i. A KEEPER? Or Just Good For A FLING?

There are two ways to look at the BMW X4 M40i: either as a lesser-than version of its X3 sibling, or a style-first interpretation of what well-moneyed young professionals want to park in their driveways.

Competent, yes, especially for its heft, but not light enough on its feet (or close enough to the ground) to make you snag the keys to this crossover versus a similarly equipped BMW sedan.

This and the GLC coupe make no sense to me in the market.

When your mainstream small SUV options from Chevy, Honda, Ford, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia are either too bland or funky in appearance....yes, the little 4-door coupe SUV's are kinda interesting.

Especially, when you can get a strong turbo or twin turbo 4/6-cyl with AWD & a lot of techno-gadgetry; the BMW, Audi, M-B options become stronger possibilities.

The rear roof treatment is very hard on the eyes. Ugh!

Had an X4 loaner- rear view is obstructed- good thing blind spot warning and back up cameras exist on these vehicles. The x3 is a better design/more cargo room. I don't hate the look but I'd buy the more practical sister vehicle over this. Yet, Mercedes and BMW seem to have made a business case for these coupe like crossovers in small and medium sizes- ... X2, X4, X6, GLC and GLE coupes...

Live in Utah and need an SUV, but want only 1 vehicle. Don't give a rats a$$ about the hauling capacity of an "ordinary" station wagon SUV. This fits our luggage and skis and with winter tires gets us safely all over the Rocky Mountains in winter. It's got the clearance we need with a lower center of gravity and wider track than an X3. Women seem to like the look vs ordinary SUV and it's a hoot to drive. When you get older, you will understand.
