A Pretty BOLD Statement. The Tesla Model 3 Killed The Rest of American Luxury. Did They?
Sure, there are plenty of American cars and trucks that outsold the Tesla—but none of them were from an American luxury brand. No Cadillacs. No Lincolns. This is further proof that we should probably start thinking of California-based Tesla as an American luxury brand. Tesla pitches this all as a sign of success for the Model 3, and it is. But it’s also a real indictment of the state of legacy American luxury autos.

The headline on this article states "The Model 3 KILLED American Luxury". Our question is do you believe that's true or are consumers wants and likes changing?

And if so, what do the luxury auto companies need to do? Or is it just over for them?

I personally don't think the Model 3 stole any sales from Cadillac or Lincoln. These shoppers would not have looked at any of their models. Audi and BMW as well as Mercedes lost sales. But not the Americans.

American luxury killed American luxury.

The only thing Tesla is doing right now is taking advantage of little to no competition in the premium EV space. It really is surprising how they have been able to be so far ahead everyone else but at the same time it makes sense. Just like the cell phone industry, Apple and Samsung came along and basically caught Motorola, Nokia, and Blackberry asleep. Though Samsung was also a player prior to smart phones.

And now Tesla has no backlog for the Model 3. In December the wait time was a few days, and now in Jan/Feb it is even less since 1/2 the tax benefit expired on 12/31.

i just don't get this line of thinking. Tesla, for good or bad, is not in a class with any other vehicles/makers. It is more of an ideological choice, just like Prius used to be.

Basically there is now Tesla where there was nothing before in this price/tech/prestige/infamy the oldbags dropped the ball and Tesla benefited.

Tesla is a 'novelty purchase' nothing more, nothing less.

Tesla has growing inventories and only 26,000 orders for Europe and China. Once the backlog was filled new orders are a trickle. It will not sell well in Europe because Europeans expect a quality, which the 3 certainly does not have.

And to cidflekken, your smart phone analogy is off. Tesla is the Blackberry in this scenario. You EV types keep thinking that the large global manufacturers were completely surprised by Tesla. They were not. However, as they already have profitable portfolios and have been publicly trader for decades, a sidetrack into risky and unprofitable niche would not be responsible.
Elon is playing games with investors and has already been reprimanded by the SEC.
As the price of the teechnology decreases and demand increases they will enter the fray, but the ICE is here for longer the Tesla.

The bigger question is will the Germans (Porsche, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz) kill Tesla?

I definitely think so.

I thought the Model 3 was supposed to be "premium" segment, but now it's "luxury" segment? Confusing.

PS VWAG will liquefy Tesla.

Math will kill Tesla. GS analyst pegs their stock at about $210 per share. It is around $307 PS today. They were able to increase cash on hand by severely reducing capex. The inability to invest in the future will reduce future revenue.
Plus with significntly more poorly built Teslas on the road their warrantly costs have soared.

I think unless you are impressed with their autopilot technology or the rapid acceleration, the car is missing a lot to be excited about for me.
