SPIED! 2020 Lexus LX. Is Lexus Giving Others Too Much Of An Opportunity To Steal The Segment From Them?

SPIED! 2020 Lexus LX. Is Lexus Giving Others Too Much Of An Opportunity To Steal The Segment From Them?
Everyone other than the Germans is gunning for Lexus.  And why not? They symbolize the soft under belly of the segment.  Just like a shark circling the school of fish, the easiest is picked off first while the strong remain unscathed.  Such is the case for the archaic LX SUV.

A large behemoth from another time, the LX signifies the tradition that size not substance matters.  It simply doesn't stack up against the competition in today's terms.

So why are we worried about it?  If these spy shots are anything to believe, then Lexus may be tipping the hand a bit too early.  The 2020 LX might have been weak to begin with, but this may leave it ripe for the picking from a new kind of shark.

If you look at the styling and features of the new Palisade and Telluride then you might wonder why anyone would spend their hard earned money on the LX.

Because I cannot think of another SUV in the segment of Range Rover, Mercedes GLS or G wagon, and Escalade that’s more reliable and cheaper to maintain if I have to drive it daily. Sorry Hyundai/Kia, you are not in the same league.

because no one cross shops a kia against a lexus or land cruiser generally. you don't buy an lx because it is most modern or fashionable, you buy it because you can drive it for 300k miles, and give it to your grand kids to take to college. i own an fj40, fj100, gx470 and fj200 and there is nothing engineered like them in the world, everything designed to last 25 years. if it was all about cutting edge tech and design would anyone buy an escalade or a yukon?

This article makes no sense...the LX does not own the segment by any figment of the imagination. The LX is one of the best built vehicles on the road period, and it can transport 4 people in extreme comfort. The issue is that is sucks gas, and the cargo space is somewhat limited for such a huge vehicle. Rumor has it that Lexus will be releasing a proper 3 row crossover in 2020...this will line up well against the GLS/X7. Lexus will do very well with that market...they know how to create crossovers that are huge sales successes. The LX may stick around as a flagship SUV, but it will not be pushed into the mainstream because the 4x4 systems and build quality push it too high in price. Not sure hat that is a spy shot of, but the LX is not scheduled for a 2020 redesign (as evidenced by the 2020 land cruiser heritage they just released that is the same vehicle as the current).

So the ancient and outdated tractor gets yet another refresh rather than a clean-sheet design. The last full redesign for this mess was more than two decades ago.

Lexus sold 15,700 LX models in 1999. They only sold 4,700 in 2018. This model really should not exist but it does due to the fact it is based on the Land Cruiser and is sold in larger numbers all over the world. As @MD said it will be the same, with some new stampings and headlights.

In contrast the Infiniti QX80 sold 19,000 units in the USA in 2018. Not pretty, but it has appeal. I would suspect Mercedes GLS sales are even higher.

I can’t believe they are using that treatment on the d-pilliar

The biggest pile of ugly I've seen in a long time.

Ugly is as ugly does. I would never have this overpriced ancient SUV in my driveway. There are so many other better alternatives.

Give me this or a G-Class. Everything else is something different.

What spy shot? All I see is some cheesy speculative rendering.

This is NOT a spy shot. It looks like some high schoolers computer rendering. The D pillar looks like it was done on an etch-o-sketch.

Some power adjustable pedals would be a nice addition.

I don't understand a company with as much money as Toyota has not completely redesigned the LX in about a decade. The LX needs to go a unibody platform, lose over 1000 lbs.

the Land Cruiser is for a specific buyer and purpose. the rest of the world can drive Pilots. Can you imagine crossing the Empty Quarter in a car with independent rear suspension and a unibody, if you don't need that capability don't buy it, and if you say no one does, that is why they don't sell many but those they do, are loved and passed down to the next generation.
