SPIED! Hyundai's Luxury Division, Genesis, FINALLY Makes Progress With Its SUV, The GV80
In the world of autos there's essentially the seven wonders.
One of them is "Why did it take BMW SO long to produce an X7 sport-utility vehicle?" Another is "What the hell is Hyundai's Genesis doing building only sedans? Where's the SUV?"
Considering Genesis hasn't exactly been lighting the sales charts on fire since the first-generation Genesis sedan disrupted things, we've been scratching our heads because SUVs are all the rage. Where is its SUV option?
At the 2017 New York Auto Show (NYIAS) the company showed off the GV80 concept. People went nuts over it with its Bentley-inspired front grille.
Finally, we're starting to see spy shots of the GV80 in production form. Equipped with heavy cladding, it's clearly in its early stages of development. It's going to be a bit of time before this puppy hits the streets, folks. At this rate Genesis may not even be in business by the time it's ready to ship.
Although there's interior shots, it's hard to decipher exactly what's going on. It appears there's an iDrive-like, touch-sensitive area on the center console but it's as clear as mud.
One thing that's interesting to note is that a BMW 7-Series is trailing the Genesis SUV. It could be a coincidence or it could be that Hyundai is benchmarking the 7-Series' ride quality for the GV80.
We'll keep our noses to the ground, Spies!

I bet Aston Martin is pissed the only thing that SUV missing is their badge...all their debt and worries would have been paid off and not just by Benz...

Genesis desperately needs a coherent marketing plan.
They also need to get rid of the Johan De Nysschen style naming.
G90 --> Genesis Icon
G80 --> Genesis Inspire
GV80 --> Genesis Invoke
G70 --> Genesis Inception
A Genesis Interceptor would be a great sports coupe name.
They need to be priced 25% below the competition and better equipped.
Then pick premium dealerships without being hung up on going after Hyundai/Kia dealerships first. Dealerships like Rusnak and Fletcher-Jones could teach Genesis a LOT.
But until the incoherent marketing is dealt with, there is no hope.

Genesis is about 5 years too late to the luxury SUV party, and their decision to not have standalone dealerships will make it hard for customers to take their entry into the luxury market seriously. Perhaps Genesis can start to compete with Buick soon in the premium segment.

They spagacked this to no end. The original Genesis should have been a Genesis and not a Hyundai Genesis. The G80 should have opened the dealers. Crossovers should have been prioritized over the G70. The stand-alone dealer launch was a DEBACLE from hell of "hey buy land for a stand alone dealer" then "we aren't doing stand alone" [stop the build] then "hey we are doing it after all but only after we turn off the supply tap and close out old product so that dealers will be without product."
THAT is the mess.
