General Motors Prepares For A Bloody Monday — 4,000 Layoffs Coming

General Motors is planning to layoff at least 4,000 salaried workers in North America starting Monday ahead of the company's fourth-quarter earnings report, according to two people briefed on the matter.

The reductions come as the largest U.S. automaker undergoes a massive restructuring announced by CEO Mary Barra in November. GM is halting production at five plants in North America and cutting 14,000 jobs as it realigns its workforce and plants to produce more electric vehicles.

Company executives want to complete as many of the layoffs as possible before the company reports its earnings Wednesday, the people said, asking not to be named because the information isn't public yet...

When your company ethic is building cars that are "good enough", but in no way great, you produce dismissible product. When you produce a dismissible product, people stay away.

Products like the Blazer and XT6 create no reaction that people "gotta have 'em" and loads of money on the hoods of other "good enough" products is adding up.

GM desperately needs to fire its entire styling studio and find people who will create gorgeous styling for Chevy and Cadillac.

Yes, two brands.

Fold GMC into Chevy and offer more styling variation on the Silverado. Send Buick to China. Cadillac keeps its place, but gains Buick's segment.

The XT6 is preferable to the Enclave, but why does GM need both?

Spot on.. just read a predictable story on the new Blazer on Car Connection which basically panned the vehicle but praised the name. The Blazer is yet another boring FWD crossover that fills a spot in Chevy's portfolio but is 80%. Crappy 4 cyl, very loud interior from the crappy 4, crappy seats, and a fairly large price tag with everything one would really want, extra cost = zero value.

It’s clear the Board is not filled with enthusiasts because I've not read a single article anywhere praising GM, GM vehicles, GM Marketing or GM Mgt in forever. The say their focused on EV’s and Autonomous vehicles, a market a decade or more away if not more, yet they cannot or will not build competitive ICE vehicles. Why do they expect to be here in 10 years if they don’t focus on what the current market is demanding? They are simply focused on quarterly profits so they can get bonuses vs building world class vehicles that grow sales and increase market share. As an American I am embarrassed for them they look like idiots

So then you are advocating 3 brands in the US, right? And Buick for China?

Time to clone Bob Lutz and make Lutz 2.0 head of GM.

Time to hire Alan Mulally. The one thing Old Mary did right was to dump Opel. What she is too stupid to realize is that she needs a partner. Honda would make an excellent quid pro quo. Honda could have pickups and a premium platform for Acura and GM could have competently engineered mainstream vehicles.
