Mexican Built Chevrolet Blazer Arrives Just In Time To See 4,000 American Works Get Laid Off

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is entering a red-hot midsize utility segment, but it's hauling some unwanted baggage.

The resurrected SUV-turned-crossover is arriving at U.S. dealerships amid outcry from unions and politicians over General Motors' decision to import the vehicle from Mexico.

Adding to the controversy is GM's plan to potentially close up to four U.S. plants and shutter Oshawa Assembly in Canada by year end.

Looks like any other cross over or small SUV. I wonder how a snow plow will be fitted to this little shoe box.

GM returning to its roots, badge engineering and cheap plastic interiors so that they can afford the inevitable large discounts to move them.

Powerfully insulting. The Blazer has the potential to be a big hit.

SUV's are usually higher margin vehicles. There is really no good reason why it can't be made in the USA or Canada. I can understand why a Corolla is made in Mexico, but Lexus RX SUV's are made in Ontario.

I'd rather have the fascist-socialists in Canada get the jobs than Mexico which is already sitting pretty with auto manufacturing. I'll bet Chinese companies buy GM plants, build here, and push GM out of the market. Just watch.

I was reading GM Authority the other day and one guy proposed that Typhoid Mary is actually looking to position GM to be aquired potentially having the Chinese gubment buy it.

Agree on the Blazer, once again another oppty for GM to lead and shine yet they choose to go cheap... Oh well if it doesnt meet expectations they'll not improve it they'll just kill it and waste the investment, they're really good at that...

MD, to your earlier comments (another thread) the new Blazer is within an inch of the Ford Edge in nearly every dimension. From this standpoint, based on the Edge's success, it makes sense.

How long do you think it will be before production moved out of Mexico to an even cheaper labor market...Vietnam, Indonesia, wherever.

For NA market alone, production in Asia may not be much cheaper if you factor in freight. However, it's the growing south Asia market, or even India, that may totally justifies manufacturing there.

Vietnam would be an interesting alternative. Toyota and Ford already produce cars there and Vietnam just introduced their own brand. However, they are about as far away from free trade as possible.

GM just want to be PC by defying Trump and opening up shop south of the border in Mexico. Their first of several cars, the first one happens to be the Blazer. Not sure if the far left will bite and buy this since the want EVs only.

The Chevy Volt was created by Bob Lutz, a conservative Republican.
GM just wants to make money for their shareholders and tRump makes this more difficult with his stupid tariffs. Sad.
