How Did This Get Past Marketing? Audi Finds Hallowed E-Tron Name Translates Loosely As TURD In French

German carmaker Audi is being ridiculed online after revealing its latest electric car model: the Audi e-tron.

As was swiftly discovered by francophones around the globe, 'e-tron' is very similar to the French word 'ètron'.

It is therefore unlikely that Frenchmen will be rushing to their local cardealers to purchase the new Audi, as 'ètron' means 'excrement' or 'turd'.

Really?! Why did it take so long for this to be pointed out? I'm not even asking Audi....why didn't we here from the millions of people who speak French.

Maybe its a very rarely-used term.

The Etron meaning in French was signaled the second Audi began using it on concepts as far back as 2010.

Yep.

I'm surprised they went ahead with it, but it's been known for years.

E-Tron (say eee-tron) as it is said in the english speaking world and etron' (et-tron) with a french accent really don't have a lot in common when you think about it. Just some similar spelling...

I'm from Quebec, Canada. Honestly, we got over it pretty quick. We just pronounce it the way it's pronounced in English. And people here are lining up to buy the e-tron.

I don't get the fuss. If a French car company made a car called the S-Hit, I don't think anybody would connect it with anything else.
