Toyota CONFIRMS GT86 Will Become The Supra's Little Brother With Second Generation

The Toyota 86 will definitely get a second generation, and it'll function as a way to offer customers a performance rung underneath the Supra in the company's lineup, according to Toyota Australia public affairs manager Brodie Bott in a discussion with GoAuto. Last week, the Japanese magazine Best Car reported that Toyota and Subaru weren't replacing the 86 and BRZ.

"I don’t know where these reports have come from, but at this stage we are certainly not looking to discontinue it, it’s a pretty important car for us and it will be the little brother to the Supra," Bott told GoAuto.

If the GT86 is a 4 cylinder version of the Supra with a TOYOTA engine under the hood, it will still be the wrong product but at least it would no longer be a rebodied Impreza with two half-shafts removed and that horrid Super Beetle thrumming would be gone. So at least a step in the right direction. Currently the Supra is $15K overpriced and the GT86 is $10K overpriced. I doubt that anything will change that.

I hope they don't do another MR2. Just engineer a light weight platform for both Supra and its brother, instead of sharing it with Z4. Fine to use BMW engine to cut cost, or might as well engineer an I6 to use in Lexus models also!

Comment quote of the day... "Fine to use BMW engine to cut cost".

I'd love to know what the cost savings was when the BMW engine was used.

Also, can we put a hidden video feed in the service departments of Toyota dealers when people start bringing their Bupra's in for service and the Camry guy/gal just looks puzzled and then starts bad-mouthing BMW quality.

Easy. What I meant is it'll be more expensive to engineer brand new I6 engine specifically for Supra and its brother, while BMW already, and will always have it.

Toyota could also use Merc's next time, which arguably has some advantage with the 48V system. We'll see

maybe they can use the Miata platform for the MR2

A front-engined car to resurrect a mid-engined car?

The fix for the GT86 would be to take the Miata, reskin it with a coupe body, turbo 4 for $25K, V6 for $30K.

You got a good point

Let's deal with this idiocy: "...What I meant is it'll be more expensive to engineer brand new I6 engine specifically for Supra and its brother..." Toyota could easily go a with a V6 that it already has.

@joneshamilton You're a moron! Of course I am well aware of the price of a Miata and it's $7-10K too high for the nothing that you get.

The base Miata would be a really great $18K vehicle.

If you can get a Mustang that will butcher a GT86 or a Miata on all parameters of performance for $25-26K and the garbage from Japan sit on the lot at $4-6K MORE, I fail to see the advantage for the steep price premium.

Stupid... Everyone knows Toyota has V6/V8, but clearly they just didn't want those in its 'sports cars' right?

Let me fix the quote "...Fine to use BMW engine to [INCREASE] cost..."

Stay with me on the Cha Cha, why would Toyota need a BMW chassis when they have completely competent RWD options of their own?
