Audi And Porsche Engineers Reverse Engineer A Model 3 And Are Shocked At What They Found

Tesla Model 3 is now entering the European market and it is making some automakers nervous. According to a new report, Porsche and Audi reverse-engineered Tesla’s new electric car and they were quite surprised by its cost. It’s somewhat common in the industry to purchase vehicles from competitor to see what they are up to, but it also becomes a necessity for vehicles that are seen as important disrupters.

The Model 3 appears to fit the description as it apparently outsold all other premium sedans combined in the US.

I guess everyone has different tastes, but more people love the interior than hate it.

I was opposed to the interior until I was actually IN the car.
From inside it all makes sense.
Will finally drive it in 42 hours.
( ????)

It's no surprise that the German platform cost more. They always over-engineer and over-complicate their designs which drives up cost.

I really like some of that over engineering :). Dare I say BMW and trunk hinges here again??

I test drove a Model 3 over the weekend for the first time.

It feels like a bank vault - much more solid than my BMW and the Audis and Mercedes I've driven.

And it feels fantastic on the road. Loved the steering, and of course the acceleration is mind blowing.

The seats were extremely comfortable and it feels upscale, but the lack of traditional controls is disconcerting and would take me a long time to get used to. Not sure I'd ever get there, to be honest.

EVisNowEVisNow - 2/11/2019 2:40:26 PM

@carloslassiter: Getting used to the Model 3's controls is surprisingly easy. It would take less than 15 minutes the first time to know where the controls are and how to use them. Most of the settings are set-and-forget anyway so you don't have to deal with them often. And if you need to change anything, it takes only a few screen touches.

Distraction from using the screen is highly exaggerated - it's part of the FUD campaign that still fools some people until they try for themselves. I think it's less distracting than your typical UI due to large screen, well laid out content and responsive touches.

I still like differentiated knobs, buttons, toggle switches etc... I hate having to take my eyes off the road to make various adjustments to the climate controls or other common functions. Nice honest assessment of what you thought about the model 3.

I doubt the German engineers were, "shocked." Look at the source of the article, "electrik.com."
This sort of hyperbole is why people dislike Tesla fanboys.
And to SanJoseBoy, your comment that more people like the interior than hate it is based on what? The 143,000 people who bought it sight unseen or the 17 million people who bought something else.

It's unbecoming even childish for you to add "Boy" to someone's "name". It's insulting to some degree but it reflects poorly on YOU. Regardless of your opinion, you should hold yourself to a minimum standard by respecting others. Did anyone do that to you ?

Hats off to Musk for creating an electric car where many have failed. However, he is also a con man, the finacials are terrible and unless a miracle happens the cash burn will kill the company. Quit acting as though Teslas are the best vehicles ever made.

Back to the topic you brought up: EV is superior - of course it is. And Tesla is a superior EV maker - ditto. If not, why would Porsche benchmark Tesla's car in its Taycan development and still can't match ?

MD, thanks for the first comment, this way I know it is you, LOL. I attended the Chicago Auto Show Saturday and would have liked your comments. The Cadillac XT6 is even worse in person. It was on a spinning platform with an attractive and NO ONE was paying any attention to it. Bad sign.

EVisNow, your false sense of superiority is showing. EVs are not superior. The have more torque. That is it. They are twice as expensive as a similiar ICE vehicle, they take much longer to refuel or recharge, they lose a lot of range in cold weather, you have to plan trips based on the availability of charging stations, etc.
And the article from an electric fanboy site did not say Porsche could not match. They will launch the EV and it will be better and more expensive than the Tesla. You poor soul, you just want so much for everyone to acknowledge that your opinion is the best and only one.

@Truthy I would have loved to have gone to the show with you and hang out. Cars are my blood.

As you may have read I recently took possession of an Alfa Romeo Giulia that was being converted from new stock to courtesy car. I also had the option to go with a left-over CT6.

The Alfa has been hellish. It's never broken down, but the idiot lights come on and go crazy. It went into limp mode and fortunately a shut off and restart cleared it. Then at a steady speed it will act like is has a miss.

I didn't go with the CT6 because when it came out I compared it to the Continental and preferred the Continental. The Alfa may go back to the courtesy car pool. The Stinger I had before it was FAR better in every way. Better build quality. Better performance. People asked me about the Stinger but never the Giulia.

We would have had fun at the show indeed.

Cool. More name calling.

Re getting used to the controls and center screen, I did drive it for about 15 minutes and I "get" how it works, I'm just not sure after driving for a couple decades that I want to reinvent the interface with my car.

Ten years ago who would've thought people stopped using phones with key board a mere 4-5 years later ? Today a BlackBerry phone would be a collectible.

For cars it may take longer due to model cycle, but it will get there: no more knobs and buttons.

Once you use the large screen for UI, there's no turning back.

I agree. I can think of a number of cars that feel right as soon as you sit in it. The Alfa Romero Guilia, MB C300, Genesis G70. The Tesla Model 3 with the flat screen cannot touch this experience.
What interiors do you spies like best?

To me its how the vehicle drives. I don't care about which has the best interior or infotainment system. Giulia may have the cheapest interior. Its more important that things work and are reliable. The Giulia's problems seem to have gotten better but have not gone away. Limp mode still appears to be a viable default option. Saying this the Giulia drives well. The ones I drove had great steering, a decent ride and had a smooth but too quiet engine note(4 cylinder). I suspect engine refinement may vary from vehicle to vehicle. I think it was Car and Driver that mentioned their long term Giulia was throwing warning codes when in fact there was nothing wrong. It feels familiar. My 500X has done the same thing in the past where it said for example that the parking lights and turn signals were none functional.(They were working fine) After a couple of runs and turning the vehicle on and off the warnings disappeared. These hypochondria like symptoms seem to part of the Italian car experience as does the horn alarm going off for no reason. But it is the imperfections that give that they say give a car character. To me the Giulia is the best looking of all the competitors.
