Analyst Predicts Tesla's Biggest Challenger Will Be Upstart Rivian, NOT The Establishment
Tesla dominates the electric vehicle market. This is especially true in the U.S. where it enjoys an 80-percent slice of the electric vehicle pie at the moment thanks to its popular Model 3. According to one Morgan Stanley analyst, though, this commanding position is at risk because of new competition. The company pointed to as being a particular threat? Rivian.

hat analyst is Adam Jonas, who has been with the firm since 1996 and who focuses on the automotive sector. He was once extremely bullish on the California automaker but has in recent times lowered his share price targets significantly — from $376 last May to $283 as of last week. Tesla is trading at $316.08, up $10.28 (3.36%) at the time of this writing.

Is this the same Rivian that once before announced imminent production and then NOTHING?

This guy Jonas is into a bit too much magic mushroom. Talk about being naïve. He likely went directly from B school to Morgan Stanley and has no real industry or business experience. This kind of witless chatter may play at your Greenwich cocktail parties Jonas but little where else.

If it’s a good product I can see the SUV making waves. The pickup might be a bigger challenge. To win over current pickup owners means, in many ways, changing the culture and thinking of many of them. Being a pickup driver goes beyond the strict utility of it. It’s a way of life and truck drivers love big, loud, and rugged. Not sure an EV pickup would deliver. It will definitely appeal to those that use the pickup for function, but at a starting price of 70k, that might be questionable. And I’d be interested to see how much of an impact cargo weight will have on range.

Adam Jones has consistently been the most bullish analyst regarding Tesla stock.
Other analyst are estimating $210 per share near term, many even lower if current trends continue.

Yet they just had their second profitable quarter in a row. In the past two years they dramatically improved autopilot functionality, something all cars built in the last 3 years benefited from.

While we eagerly await the release of Tesla's audited financial statements (going concern opinion or not?)...

I am reminded that the Elon Musk Tesla story is art imitating life...and I think Elon is Evita Peron, the Telsa fans are the poor Argentinian's who irriatonally LOVE her, and Tesla is now deep into the second act just before the whole thing goes T*ts up...

Elon-Evita- "S/He is a Diamond"

PERON:
But on the other hand, she's all they have
She's a diamond in their dull gray lives
And that's the hardest kind of stone
It usually survives
And when you think about it, can you recall
The last time they loved anyone at all?

But on the other hand, she's slowing down
She's lost a little of that magic drive
But I would not advise those critics present to derive
Any satisfaction from her fading star
She's the one who's kept us where we are

The Tesla story will either make a great Harvard Business School Case Study about how to start a car company and make a lot of money or else a great tradgi-drama play or 3 hour long Oliver Stone Film about things lost.

Rivian looks promising but I'll reserve judgement until I see the Tesla truck.

From all the info so far, the Tesla Truck is probably going to be their most polarizing product. Rivian looks like the truck people are already familiar with and they added a lot of clever utility. All we know about the Tesla truck is that it will seat 6 people, be larger than an F150, and look like something out of Blade Runner. I'm a little nervous it will be too out there to go mainstream and it will be another 3 years before they release a normal looking truck.
