Is It Just Us Or Does The Audi e-tron Design Look Fifteen Years Old Even Before It Hits Dealer Showrooms?
There is a huge panic across the traditional automotive space as Tesla gains more and more momentum. And it seems of all the companies, the German's are showing the most anxiety.

And can you blame them? A couple years ago, you couldn't go a day and not see newly registered 3-series BMW's all over the streets of SoCal.

Fast forward to today...Take that same drive and it's hard to even find ONE new 3-Series that just got sold cruising the 'it' spots in the most important car sales market in the USA. At the LA auto show a couple years back, BMW, MB and Audi were bragging that 33% or so of their entire business came out of Southern California.

As you drive here now, you see 10-20 Tesla model 3's with new registrations.

And I think one of the key reasons for it's success is because the design is contemporary and fresh.

So you would think that any new model that would compete against a Tesla would be DOA with what is considered a traditional, conservative exterior.

And that's exactly what I thought when I saw Audi show the new e-tron (just got delayed due to battery issues) at the reveal and at the last few auto shows.

My first impression at launch was WHY did they  just show us a re-badged All-Road. And the more I see it, I feel it looks like a fifteen year old design. And it won't hit dealer showrooms for a long time!

So what say you Spies, so you LIKE the look and do you think it will be a success or is it DOA and has ZERO chance against against the momentum leader Tesla.

Spies, discuss...

Too early to call it DOA. One of my coworkers is getting one so hopefully I'll get to check it out soon. It has some cool feature like the side mirrors, but Audi's EV concepts looked way nicer.

It looks like a Chinese copy of a Q5 with some Japanese hellishness thrown in. Not attractive. The Mercedes boat is no looker either. The Taycan, however is looking niiiiiiiiiiice.

It will be DOA, just on Audi's refusal to stock the dealers with it. If people do look at it they will find that it lacks the performance, utility, and relative efficiency of the Model X, it is rather porky, and coolest features promised like the sideview cameras and the charging ports on both sides didn't make it. And if that wasn't enough there is already competition from the I-Pace and the EQC.

It is too bad because this vehicle has a lot to offer.

The got rid of the sideview cameras??? Noooo, that was the best part of the car.

Neither the press vehicles in Europe, nor the demo vehicles in the States have the sideview cameras. In the States it is understandable, sideview mirrors are required, but in Europe the omission is peculiar.

Siedeviw cameras made it into production in Europe.
Optional and not that great in real life.

Ok, thanks. Maybe that's why they didn't want to show them to the press.

I just saw it at the Chicago Auto Show. It looks solid and hi tech.
I will push back on the first sentence that there is panic across the auto industry. Tesla sold a whopping 150,000 cars a good portion of which are backlog filling.

I’ve made the comment about all of Audi’s new products that they look like they are going backwards in time with their styling approach. Circa 2008 there was barely an Audi that I didn’t think was really good looking. Today, there isn’t a single car in the lineup that lights my fire. The best looking one is the A5 Sportback but it still doesn’t look that much different than an aged Fusion. Now that the A7/S7/RS7 looks like a squashed Crosstour and should be wearing a skirt, nothing over there interests me. This e-Tron does not help matters in the least. It looks at least a decade old out the gate. Even the Q8 has a somewhat similar feeling.

Regarding other EVs from Germany, the EQC is a bit conservative but at least it appears Mercedes is going in a forward direction. Though the grille is really unbecoming. The Porsche Taycan looks amazing but the rear quarters may prove to be space challenged. BMW? No idea

I like this vehicle and the A7 and A5 Sportback. The surface details and interiors are well done. But, I understand the comments as their products are both familiar and very similar across the range.
I like to gauge the reaction of my two young adult children. They had no interest in stopping at the Audi both - boring designs that haven't changed for years.

Better looking than the Q5 but still, nothing special.

You can get the side view cameras in Europe, but not in the US.

Of course it looks old. Audi and BMW are having a contest to see who can use the same design DNA the longest.
