Both Amazon And GM In Talks To Aquire Major Stakes In EV Maker Rivian

Amazon.com Inc. and General Motors are in talks to invest in Rivian Automotive in a deal that would value the U.S. electric pickup truck manufacturer at between $1 billion and $2 billion, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

The deal would give Amazon and GM minority stakes in Rivian, the sources said. It would be a major boost for the Plymouth, Mich., startup, which aspires to be the first automaker with an electric pickup.

If the negotiations conclude successfully, a deal could be announced as early as this month, the sources said, asking not to be identified because the matter is confidential. There is always a chance that deal talks fall through, the sources cautioned.

Being first to market with a BEV pick up truck is not where you want to be. Hanging back a bit to see if they sell and can haul and handle the cold to the satisfaction of pick up truck buyers is the right strategy. Let someone, anyone else be first. Go slow, then go fast....

But you need to already be deep in R&D (while) watching the competition. If you wait to get consumer buy-in & then START developing the vehicle; it'll be 3-4 years before the final product goes into production. That's a lot of missed time & puts an old plan at risk of being obsolete before vehicle 001 rolls off the assembly line.

Great comment, I was going to say, "perhaps GM should just buy this company and destroy this product before its even produced?"...

STUPID MOVE buying into a company with ZERO experience in building cars which once before announced production and then production went poof. GM would be better off with Tesla.

This seems to be a good forward-looking deal. Assuming Amazon is working on the interior telematics & GM can help with exterior designs for multiple size ranges.

Hummer EV that actually hums as it glides down the streets?
