Is It Me Or Does It Seem Like The BMW M3's Days Are Numbered?
Yesterday was an interesting day.

That's because the all-new BMW X3 M and X4 M made their big time debut. We've only been waiting for about 12-18 months to see the wrapper come off. And, boy, it seems like we've got a helluva product here.

All-new 2020 BMW X3 M and X4 M

There's just one very real consequence for these über sport-utility vehicles: It renders the sedan counterparts outdated. Case in point: Once the X5 M and X6 M appeared on the market, the M5 didn't seem like the relevant choice anymore.

At least in a day and age when SUVs rule the roost.

While I am sure there will be plenty of folks out there who say these SUVs do not make sense, I dare them to actually push one. Like, around a track. In theory it sounds absolutely ridiculous and, frankly, I wouldn't buy an X3 M or X4 M for track duty; however, when you do push these vehicles to their limits you learn something. The SUVs drive as good as the heavy sedans at the limit.

So, assuming the X3 M and X4 M deliver the performance, AND the added utility, I've got to ask: Do the M3's days seem numbered?

The M4 coupe is well positioned to exist for some time to come. The sedan, on the other hand...

Nope, that is similar to saying Mcdonalds may remove the Big Mac for their menu because they are focusing on being healthy...or Apple may discontinue their laptops because they are focusing on mobile devices...Or you prefer one child over another because you are helping one with homework...

@AgentOOR- Fair question. However every time I see a "performance" SUV on the road I can't help but think a fool has been separated from their money. These are silly wasteful cars. The coupe versions being the worst of the worst. And pricing snow tires and rims to fit over big brakes is outlandish. Feel free to drive an SUV if you need the space, but don't think it is a can ever be a sports car.

Have you driven an X5M on the track?

Quicker than an E46 M3...

@MD- It is just actually an example of how adults speak to each other in the corporate world. You can disagree without being disagreeable.

That was a ref to the first-gen X5M and the fact is for a massively huge SUV its performance is impressive.

But, hey, if you guys wanna act like idiots, so be it...

It's you. If I wanted a high powered trackable SUV, I could get a Macan Turbo today. I drive cars!

The M5's days might be numbered. The M5 should be cancelled and replaced by the M8 Grand Coupe.

For sake of brand clarity, if BMW wants to sell a large performance sedan, they should replace the Alpina B7 with a proper M7. Not that it would be a big seller, but it has always bothered me that the Alpina B7 was based on the "luxury" version of the 7-Series and its looks "pep-boys" compared to the M-Sport 7-Series. Why is the Alpina still part of BMW's lineup - no one in America cares.

Completely agreed regarding the B7 mess.

Better to get an M760i and call it a day. The B7's V8 does nothing for me.

What BMW SHOULD sell in the US is the 530i/540i estate wagon. That would be a good use of the development dollars formerly allocated to the M5 when they cancel it.

It's you. The M3 has helped define this segment and is a BMW signature vehicle.

I thought the BMW 2002tii was the signature vehicle

What everyone seems to be forgetting is that the M4 is the signature vehicle now.

When the E46 M3 didn't bring a sedan no one cared!

Personally I would rather spend money on an X5 xdrive50i.
