Should BMW Dump The 8 Cylinder Engine on the next 7-Series?

The latest emissions regulations took its toll on the 7 Series, and the outlook isn’t good for high-displacement, gas-guzzling engine options. To this effect, the Bavarian automaker could discontinue the V8 and V12 for the seventh generation.

“Sources” told a BMW Blog that “deep changes are in the works in Munich regarding their current flagship.” Those same sources further suggest “the upcoming lineup will be made up of six-cylinder engines coupled with electric motors in a variety of guises."

The question to be asked at focus groups is: How many of these 7 series are used for a more than 200 Km (120 mile) drive on a single trip? Go with a hybrid platform.

Yes, dump the V-8 for a glorious V-12 engine that has cylinder deactivation for greater fuel economy.

Doesn't matter to me, just keep it quiet, smooth, and effortless. The Rolls-Royce ethos.

But also, don't forget people who don't have a charger at home, and don't want to spend an hour charging up every few days.

On a tangent, I cannot get past the irony that the redone Genesis G90 looks so much better than the truly terrible revise of the truly terribly styled 7 Series.

Its amazing how the 8 series looks so nice in its exterior design and this 4dr looks like a dowdy lump. Any 5 series looks nicer on the exterior than this. And interior just does not cut it. They own Rolls Royce. Maybe they need to have the their interior man do a little double duty on the 7 series. Certainly Mercedes and Audi put this design to shame. They don't need a V8 but I guess if Mercedes and Audi are going to offer one BMW will have to.
