Is Tesla A CULT? Whatever It Is, It's HAMMERING BMW Just Like We Predicted

One of the largest U.S. auto dealers just had a rough quarter selling BMWs, and a top executive said Tesla Inc. played a major role.

Sonic Automotive Inc., the fifth-largest U.S. dealership group, reported a disappointing fourth-quarter profit on Wednesday.

Dyke said. “My hat off to them -- they’re selling a lot of cars, and there is no question in California that it’s getting in our shorts.”

The Spies say the car that USED to be unbeatable and the most important product they sell, the BMW 3-Series, is getting OWNED in Ca. by Tesla.

And there is NO sign BMW has an answer coming soon or EVER.

Is the 3-series DONE or can BMW stage a comeback? And if so, HOW?

Well there is a bit to unpack here. 1) Tesla has a cult around it, however not all who admire or own a Tesla are part of that cult. From the people I have met I would say 25-30% are. 2) Yes a lot of 3 series BMWs, A4 series Audis, C class Mercedes and likely some Lexus, Infinity and Caddilac among others are like to see sales impacted by the Tesla 3 sales. 3) Is the 3 series BMW done? Not likely at least not for now. Hopefully they have some exciting new models I understand the i4 is close to production and that would certainly help. Ensuring the 3 series sets the bar for dynamics by a good margin in the class would be a good starting point to reclaim their spot on the top.

Not a cult. They're just building great products that a lot of people want.

NO BMW is hammering itself with homogenized, dated and uninspired "safe" designs and others are offering more compelling products that people are voting for with their $.

It merely points out that the Germans have been lazy and incompetent in relying on ICE cars because of their thirst for pure $$$ profit. They have been lazy lazy lazy in their R&D of EV tech, and below the standard in execution of their latest offerings. The Germans run well behind efficiency, range, and perfomance of Tesla and even the Chevy Bolt for that matter. The e-Tron that is only now rolling out is behind the curve before it even really hits showrooms. And the Porsche Taycan remains long term vaporware with unknown official specs or price.

There are no stats here to back up this claim.
First, it is at the end of the product cycle with a new 3 coming to market now. Second, competition from crossovers, including including BMW's own X3. Third, this one dealer is in California where Tesla is most successful.
But the subject of the article, yes it is a cult.

Less cult...more "electric chic" Its hip, fashionable, trendy to be ahead of the curve and topic of conversation at the water cooler or next cocktail party. Every Tesla owner I know brings it up in conversation to bring attention to themselves not just the car. We are hard wired to this behavior, part of our DNA.

the "cult" label is kinda harsh, isn't it?

if that's how it feels, then what are Apple & Android fanatics?

This site pushes all things that are positive for Tesla. Saying the BMW is getting "owned" in all caps is the reaction of a fanboy. Two months of backlog fill in mostly one state is hardly a reliable metric. Tesla's position is unsustainable. BMW is solid.

Tesla is successful only because of well to do moronic liberals who like to think they are doing something for the environment while getting a subsidy courtesy of the Obama era disaster of a government. It makes them feel better while smelling their own farts.

Bottom line right now Tesla's reliability(especially with the Model 3)ain't so good. BMW's I4 is coming out fairly soon. It is a lot more conventional than an I3 and is 3 series sized. Then we can see if the quality such as proper paint finish, proper fitting door panels and glass of the I4 stack up well against a Tesla Model 3.I suspect it might.
