GM CEO Mary Barra Is Too Busy To Appear Before Canadian Legislators Over Plant Closure
General Motors Co Chief Executive Mary Barra will not come before Canadian legislators to answer questions about the automaker's future in the country, but lower-ranking executives will appear, a lawmaker said. GM said in November it would close its Oshawa, Ontario, assembly plant by year-end, part of a broad restructuring affecting four other plants in the United States, as it cuts costs and invests in electric and self-driving vehicles.

Last month, the Canadian Parliament's Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology approved Vice Chairman Brian Masse's request for Barra to "explain GM's future and continued commitment to the Canadian automotive and manufacturing industry."

Nationalize the plant. GM clearly doesn't care and won't mind.

Keep the Oshawa plant going until a Chinese buyer can step in and make BEV's for the North American market.

Why the hell would anyone want to open a new plant in Ontario? We have the most expensive electricity costs thanks to 14 disastrous years of Liberal government incompetence and green energy, a pro-union anti business environment -thanks to the same Liberal asshole government, labor laws that favour employees (takers) over the employers (makers) and now a federal Carbon Tax to chase even more of the last few manufacturing jobs away to the US, Mexico or anywhere else than here thanks to our feminist, peoplekind PM -Mohamed Trudeau.

I get it CommyComments -you obviously have a nice comfy government job where everything is coloured in rose coloured glasses and you can comment at will during the day as my taxes are paying your sorry ass bloated salary and outrageous retirement fund and benefits while I work 80 hours a week to make sure my employees have a job and can put food on their table (longest sentence ever award!). Stop with the clueless commentary as you have no fucking idea what it takes that entrepreneurs make or what goes into launching a business, making it work and the sacrifices -monetary, physical and mental one must make to succeed. But to you we are "lucky" and should pay our fair share of taxation so other "takers/losers" can exist on my blood, sweat and tears. Sorry but fuck them!

I AM a manufacturer and I also have "some" shit made in China -not by choice but rather so I can survive and compete on a COG basis or I would be out of business as ALL of my competitors are 100% offshore made so spare me the bullshit. Ontario was ONCE the manufacturing power house of the world but successive Liberal governments have screwed us into the history books.

Thanks for the honesty, qwerty, I live in NYC and our socialist D*ckwads just chased away Amazon from !!!!QUEENS!!!! (there is nothing in Queens at this point except prisons and airports) and NYC is projected to lose something like $25 BILLLION over 10 years (Amazon plus the multiplier effect of supporting businesses).

The glory days of made in Windsor, Ontario are over. Does Ford still have a plant there or did that close too?

@QEW - Chinese MFG's have already expressed making BEV cars and buses in North America and have expressed interest in that plant and others. I suspect as more focus on the North American car market you will see these brands scoop up idled plants and workers.

Wow 4 bottle merlot bitchy night yesterday -stressful week or was that my toxic masculinity coming out???

mre30

But nutbar OAC was celebrating this like some kind of victory. Yeah Toronto got passed over for that gig and while Amazons concessions were rich the net benefit was well worth the cost. Utter stupidity for NY to chase them out like that with all those high paying jobs that will now be spread out to existing centers. I guess you can build more prisons and landing strips then.

Yes, Ford still operates 2 plants in Windsor Ontario, as well as a big assembly plant in Oakville Ontario.
