RUMOR: Tesla Readying Lease Option For Model 3 — Could BOOST Interest In Model 3 BUT There's A Catch...
So, I learned something today. Apparently you cannot lease a Tesla Model 3.

You can only pay cash or finance the vehicle.

According to the latest reports from the internet rumormill, that may be changing though. That's because an internal email leaked out and has noted that employees will be able to lease Model 3 vehicles in about two week's time.

Electrek spoke with a Tesla representative who noted the following:

“This is simply an internal document to ensure teams are prepared for when we eventually introduce a leasing option to customers. No decision has been made about when Model 3 leasing will be available, but it will definitely be after the dates outlined in this document.”

Tesla has noted it is interested in offering a lease option later this year; however, there's just one problem. Leased vehicles do not look great on financial statements. So, they're supposedly holding off.

Stay tuned, Spies. We have a feeling leasing will be available sooner than Tesla is communicating.

Tesla has been keeping one card close to its chest when it comes to creating additional demand for Model 3: leasing options.

Now Electrek has learned that Tesla is preparing to launch its leasing products for Model 3 as outlined in an email sent to employees.

Sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla sent an email to employees this week to let them know they will be able to lease Model 3 within the next two weeks...

No question leases will stimulate the top line. The key question is what residual values will be used at the time leases are initiated and what will the impact be on resale values of owners who purchased the Model 3 and Tesla's own bottom line when leases expire. I suspect the company of having some very creative accounting practices to buy itself time but one day the piper has to be paid and the chickens come home to roost.

"Free" leases are usually a sign of trouble. I think you can get a Fusion for no money down and 49 cents a month these days.

Rick said: It can't make their financial statements any worse. Tesla needs to move metal anyway they can.

Profitable two quarters in a row. The statements look just fine.

Teslas tend to have the highest resale value in their class, at least for the S/X. The 3 has not been around long enough but used sales have shown good residuals so far.

@FAQMD These days, leases are all economic fakery. Residual values are inflated to bring down the payment. Sure, there has to be SOME value left over, but don't bet the farm on it.

@SJD Idiocy: "Teslas tend to have the highest resale value in their class..." Given that Tesla as been the lone brand in its segment of course it has the highest resale value but the assertion is dubious.

This whole comment thread is full of flawed logic.

The article says its a leasing program for Tesla employees only = which indicates its a way to move inventory. By the way for financial statement purposes, its in the Grey Area of "Related Party Transactions" at some point if its a special program for employees only and not the general public.

The fact that the general public cannot lease a Model 3, speaks volumes - mostly for the reasons of (a) credit quality; (b) residual value; and (c) unknown quality. I'd love to see the financial data on leasing for Model S and Model X, though maybe somebody could 'back into' the numbers if they leased one.

SPIES - If you leased a Tesla S or X, what were the lease terms?

A colleague has a Model 3. After he had it for three weeks it needed to go back to the mother ship for repairs and that's where it's been for some time.

I drove throw a Tesla lot in the Boston area today when I noticed rows of unsold Model 3's. Some where parked bumper to bumper 3-4deep 12 rows across, had to be easily over 90 cars on the lot. Not detailed, and certainly unsold.
Considering the people I know who bought the Model 3 where called my sales people the day the car came and and pushed the them to come pick up it ip or it would go to the next customer in line. With this much inventory Tesla will need to come up with some lease programs to move cars.
