Peugeot To Spearhead French Return To US Market

France's PSA Group will return to North America with the same brand that it pulled out of the region 28 years ago: Peugeot.

CEO Carlos Tavares pointed to Peugeot’s "strong growth" and profitability in revealing the selection Tuesday in Paris. Since announcing its planned return in 2016, PSA has maintained that any of its brands – including Citroen, DS and, more recently, Opel – might lead the comeback to the U.S. and Canada.

The vehicles for the U.S. will initially be sourced from China and Europe, he said.

I have a soft spot for French cars, especially the idiosyncratic Citroens.

While I do too, the question is do they offer something really different and do they have the cash resources to support a dealer network and marketing campaign. Personally I don't think so. The US market is saturated with manufacturers and models.

"Idiosyncratic" means low quality, low reliability, lots of trips to the dealer for service, high cost of repairs.

Sorry but who would be dumb enough to invest the capital into opening dealerships? They failed miserably before and the product line still isn't much better now but I always did like the lines of the 405sti.

I'm really curious to know with whom they spoke to give them the impression that the Peugeot brand awareness is still very strong in the US. And what does it say that the largest concentration of the remaining 1500 Peugeot cars in the US are located in Alabama?

Supposedly Alfa Romeo brand awareness was very strong too in the USA and both the Giulia and Stelvio failed miserably to meet sales volume goals and further have shown signs of collapse even from their dismal volume.

The French do not have a snowball's chance in Hell of success in the American market. The Chinese do, but not the French.

I would think Renault could make a better go of it than Peugeot. With hot hatches like the Megane RS280, an F1 team and also being a noted engine supplier, it may have more appeal to new car buyers who don't remember the brand from the last time it was for sale in North America.

Renault is already here. They are called Nissans.

@MD- Same umbrella, but not the same offerings. Not sure why you think a Chinese brand would fare better. Buying a cheap Chinese TV at Costco is one thing, putting your kids in a Chinese made car or SUV is quite another. They will make cars that meet EU and North American safety standards one day. But that day is not here yet. I still think there is a cool factor Renault could leverage. But to your point, Alfa Romeo is lagging and it is hard to get more Italian, or with a stronger heritage card + racing history card to play than that. And yet... sales are not strong.

You don't think the Chinese are capable of making a auto that can meet or exceed US crash specs or topple anything the US puts out? Give your head a shake.

How long did it take them to start from scratch and conquer space starting from scratch? Exactly! China is the smartest race of people on earth and they can out manufacture anybody for a fraction of the cost with far better QC standards ***IF THAT IS WHAT YOU SPECIFY AND ORDER*** ie Apple products. If you go cheap you get cheap ie Walmart. They WILL dominate the auto industry within 5 years and control 70% of the worlds manufacturing. The future language of business is NOT English -it's Mandarin.

The reason the Chinese will prosper and the turds from France won't is simple.

Bigots like the Trudeau ass kisser above will assume the Chinese are an inferior race and are incapable of excellence. Meanwhile Communistcomments with his French-centric jingoism will dance and celebrate the return of dated, substandard, garbage from France with the reliability of an Alfa Romeo and and will defend its superiority to the death.

We've seen him get messianic on idiocy and damn near go Antifa on us.

Good to read you both agree with me! Alfa is not doing well. It is by their own hand and they had every advantage under the sun a brand could have from the start. They just had to get the cards built right and they have not. As for the Chinese, yes they do make Apple products and likely could make other things too, like great safe cars, but they have chosen not to so as of yet. The future is in their hands.

Like I said: "...the Trudeau ass kisser above will assume the Chinese are an inferior race and are incapable of excellence..." Point proven.

@MD Making fake points and fake facts is best left to the current occupant of the White House. Stick to selling cars and drinking Martini's. Perhaps one too many today?

Sticking your nose into American politics is arrogant on your part because you're a foreigner.

But, hey, thanks for snapping on the bait so mindlessly. You made yourself look S-T-O-O-P-I-D.

You also did not attempt to refute that (1) you're a Trudeau ass kisser or (2) that you thin the Chinese are an inferior race, so therefore those two assessments of you are left standing given that they went unchallenged.

It must really gall you quite a bit that you'd die to be me in your heart-of-heart fantasies, but you just aren't the man for the job.
